Our manager Chunta works with several small groups of tailors with varying skill levels around Kathmandu. According to her:

“The tailors work by the piece and it is hard to tell the hours they work depending on the power cut at times but most probably it must be around 8 hours per day.

Most of the tailors have some primary education say 4-5 grades with minimal knowledge of English though they can read and write some in Nepali. But nowadays in the stitching section more women have come to this field.

In the sari skirt section there are 3 girls who came from the village to attend college in Kathmandu. Each has one months training on a sewing machine. They go to college in the morning and then during the day they do stitching. They said they make enough each month to pay for their rent, their college and food expenses and they like it. Right now they are doing well but after they finish their education they plan to go abroad to work.

Most of these people like the job they are doing since they have control of their time. It’s not like an office job where you have to be on time. All the producers like Ganesh Himal since you really appreciate and understand their work situation and are the best in giving timely orders and payment. Your continuous orders have made the workers able to plan their future better and they’ve been able to involve more women to work who otherwise would be sitting home–especially the women who make the headbands, they do not need much skill.”

Many of the products produced by Peljor’s tailors utilize vintage silk saris. The smooth texture of silk requires additional expertise in cutting and sewing. Most of the tailors who produce our silk items have been working at the craft for over ten years. The master tailor, Pushpalal (pictured at right with glasses) has provided a place to stay and food for all of his tailors if necessary. When asked about their work, the tailors said that they very much enjoy working with Pushpalal because he is very understanding and the space in which they work is very nice with lots of natural light. The only complaint is when power goes out and there is no petrol available to run the generator–a common challenge in Kathmandu.
