Artisan Spotlight: Sadle Tailors

The Ganesh Himal Trading tailors create a beautiful array of men’s and women’s clothing, bags and headbands. Mostly made from handwoven cotton fabric, the tailors partner with many local weavers to produce some of the highest quality handmade clothing.  In addition to handwoven fabrics,  they also incorporate recycled and sustainable materials including hemp, recycled rubber, no kill leather, recycled saris and wool.

Ram Bahadur’s Story

Ram Bahadur was born in Chitwan (which is 140 km away from Kathmandu) and he now lives near Thamal in Kathmandu. He has a family of 5, 1 son and 4 daughters who are now all grown. Ram Bahadur is a pattern master and fabric cutting master, but can also act as a tailor if he is called to. Tailoring has been in Rams family for more then 4 centuries. He first began to tailor when he was 15 years old and learned from his father. In turn he has taught this trade to his son and 3 of his daughters. Being able to work at Sadle has given him the ability to buy a nice piece of land and build a fair ­sized house on it. It has also enabled him to send his children to school . In the future he wants to continue to work here at Sadle until he retires. When he retires he wants to live with his family and play with and help take care of his grandchildren. Ganesh Himal Trading has worked with Ram for over 27 years!

Where was Ram born and how old is he?
 He born in Baglung district ( western hilly region) of Nepal). He is now 59 years old.

How long has Ram worked with Sadle Trading? 24 years since 1992 till now

What is his level of education? Very General- he hardly can read numbers, no letters, hardly does signature. He never attended school for formal education.

How did he learn tailoring? Ram is from traditional tailor caste and he also has an innate talent in tailoring, he has a gift! He worked for a fairly large garment industry from where he learned to be a cutting master.

What does he like most about his job? He really appreciate his profession as cutting master and loves to teach others how to tailor.

How many children does he have, how old are they, what level of education do they have and what are they doing now? He has 5 children.

Daughter– Bhanu Pariyar- 43 years old, Tailor

Son– Prakash Pariyar of age 39 years old, Tailor & working in Middle East.

Tek Bahadur’s Story

Tek Bahadur is 37 years old and works at Sadle in Bhaktuper Nepal. He was born in Trisuli, a small village far away from Kathmandu. He now lives in Thamel Kathmandu (which is a hour drive away from where he works). He has a family of family of 4, 3 daughters and his wife. Tek specializes in making leather, tire and hemp bag samples for the buyers. When he was 12 he started making shoes in a leather factory. He has been tailoring since 1985 and started working with Sadle in 1992. With the money he has made he was able to send his 3 young daughters to a good boarding school. With the money he made tailoring he was also able to buy a fair sized house and provide a sustainable living for his family. In the future Tek Bahadur wants to make a leather factory of his own he will bring in leather from the villages and sell it to Sadle.

Located in Bhaktapur, Sadle creates environmentally sustainable products from materials such as hemp, no kill leather and recycled rubber inner tubes.  It was founded in 1984 and currently works with 30 jewelers and tailors.  Sadle is the oldest and largest exporter in Nepal and works to source all of its raw materials from Nepal, which in turn, supports the local economy.  This producer group is very committed to breaking down caste barriers and religious differences between employees, so that everyone is treated equally, the working environment is harmonious, and every individual is well paid.
