Description
The Lagankhal Weaving Group joined the Association of Craft Producers (ACP) in 1985 with the hope of earning money for their families and children. Starting with four women who had no weaving skills, ACP trained the group in simple flat weaving. After receiving their training the group chose to create their own communal workshop near their homes in Kathmandu so that they could work in their spare time and be near their children when they needed them. Since 1985 the group has expanded to thirteen women weavers, of which a majority are the main breadwinners in their families.
The Lagankhal Weaving Group’s affiliation with ACP and Fair Trade has transformed the economic and social opportunities for each producer. ACP’s producer programs focus on helping women develop skills from which they can not only earn a living but create an earning capacity that can give them economic power and decision making in their families and communities.
