Accumulating and Sharing Wisdom

There seems to be a gestalt of passing the baton in the air these days! I love it! There is so much accumulated wisdom to share and the time is now to move it forward! The world is changing and there are wonderful young people willing to bring that change on. As I grow older I realize that now is my time to pass the baton and to realize that the accumulated wisdom I have gained over the years in experimenting with different ways of how we can do “business” in a “fair way” can and should be passed on! 

Last fall, I was contacted by Professor Maria Spencer who teaches a graduate Practicum in Innovation and Critical Thinking at Penn State. Maria was working with a graduate student from Nepal, Dibya Burlakoti , who is highly motivated to empower women in the villages in the buffer zone around Chitwan National Park where she grew up. Dibya was looking for a business mentor who had worked in Nepal with marginalized women.  I was so honored to be asked to provide what wisdom I could and to step into conversation with them.

Over the last year we have met many times and Dibya has made incredible strides. She has decided to focus on creating a sustainable Rhino Poo/banana fiber paper and a non-chemically intensive banana fiber yarn that can be used for export. She’s won competitions at Penn State for funding her research and created an organization that she calls Himalayan ShePower. She has even restructured her Master’s program to look at sustainable products that could be created to  provide much needed income to women in the villages where she grew up. She’s found a co-collaborator with a Doctoral student at Penn State, Sadie Sharma, who grew up 10 miles from Dibya  (though they didn’t know each other then) and who is an expert in wildlife conservation and Rhinos! There is much promise for these young, incredibly smart women and I am trying to mentor them from my experience as well as introduce  them to the many amazing mentors we work with in Nepal.  I look forward to continuing to collaborate and we hope in the future that you will see Ganesh Himal Trading and many other Fair Traders distributing their Himalayan ShePower products. This week I heard from Professor Spencer that Dibya and Sadie  “sponsored two Learning Factory projects with our College of Engineering,” this summer. “The College liked the projects so much, some of the faculty have offered to put their own research funding into it.  We kick off this fall and will hopefully have some good feasibility assessment/safety & efficiency work done by this fall.  The girls are also working with a Nepali university to start prototyping the poo + banana fiber paper.  They have gotten great traction with the government officials in Nepal and have applied for some special project funding.”

Dibya will finish her Masters this December and may look for ways she can experience retail and wholesale in the U.S. as she finishes. She wants to gain a more in depth understanding of all that is involved and the quality people want, so if anyone knows of opportunities in the Pennsylvania or surrounding areas please let me know and I’ll pass them on to her. At some point I would love to put together a group of people they can talk with to understand the perspectives of both Fair Trade Retailers and Wholesalers.  In this way we can, with our collective wisdom, help create positive pathways forward for energetic, highly educated, visionary, young Nepali women! I hope you will help!

So, I believe the wisdom of so many years of doing this work is valuable to those now wanting to step in. I hope so. I think this accumulated wisdom that we all share as Fair Traders needs to be passed along so that the movement and the understanding of how to work equitably in the world will continue to move forward. I hope you too will take your knowledge and mentor others along this incredible path we share.
