After receiving their training the group chose to create their own communal workshop near their homes in Kathmandu so that they could work in their spare time and be near their children when they needed them.  Since 1985 the group has expanded to thirteen women weavers, of which a majority are the main breadwinners in their families.

The Lagankhal Weaving Group’s affiliation with ACP and Fair Trade has transformed the economic and social opportunities for each producer.  ACP’s producer programs focus on helping women develop skills from which they can not only earn a living but create an earning capacity that can give them economic power and decision making in their families and communities.  As producer partners with ACP the women from the Lagankhal Weaving Group receive the following:

  • a fair wage, access to low cost health care, peer counseling services, savings programs, and funds for educating their children (with priority given to female children);
  • educational training in the valuation of their work, which gives them greater power in the marketplace and true (rather than perceived) income;
  • Access to a welfare fund, a bonus program, informal educational events, and low-cost loans and a worker’s union.

We help them to design products and order from them every two months on a year round basis so that these women are constantly receiving orders and income. They make many of Ganesh Himal’s most popular and beautiful table runners, placemats and rugs.

The Lagankhal group chose to work in a rented space so that they could be close to their children and families.  After 25+ years their workspace had become run down yet their landlord was not interested in remodeling.  Ganesh Himal Trading knew how important the community workspace was to these women so in 2011 we agreed to raise $5000 to remodel it.  In partnership with our wholesale customers Ganesh Himal agreed to donate $2500 if our customers raised the other ½.  By January of 2012 the money was raised and with ACP’s leadership the workshop restoration was finished by October of 2012!  This was a wonderful collaborative process between Ganesh Himal Trading, our customers, ACP and the weavers.  Now they have a beautiful, well-lit workspace and it even survived the 2015 earthquakes![/fusion_text][fusion_checklist icon=”fa-check” iconcolor=”#ffffff” circlecolor=”#dd9933″ size=”18px”][fusion_li_item icon=”fa-camera”]GALLERY[/fusion_li_item][/fusion_checklist][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”2_5″ layout=”2_5″ last=”yes” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ class=”” id=”” min_height=”” hover_type=”none” link=””][fusion_images picture_size=”auto” hover_type=”zoomin” autoplay=”yes” columns=”1″ column_spacing=”13″ show_nav=”yes” mouse_scroll=”no” border=”yes” lightbox=”yes”][fusion_image link=”” linktarget=”_self” image=”https://dev.ganeshhimaltrading.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_5199-225×300.jpg” alt=””/][fusion_image link=”” linktarget=”_self” image=”https://dev.ganeshhimaltrading.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_5194-300×225.jpg” alt=””/][fusion_image link=”” linktarget=”_self” image=”https://dev.ganeshhimaltrading.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_5195-225×300.jpg” alt=””/][fusion_image link=”” linktarget=”_self” image=”https://dev.ganeshhimaltrading.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_5198-225×300.jpg” alt=””/][/fusion_images][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ layout=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none” last=”no” hover_type=”none” link=”” border_position=”all”][fusion_title size=”1″ content_align=”left” style_type=”default”]Featured Artisan: Indira Tamang, Weaver[/fusion_title][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”2_3″ layout=”2_3″ last=”no” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ class=”” id=”” min_height=”” hover_type=”none” link=””][fusion_text]Indira has a similar story to that of many ACP producers. As a small girl, she was denied an education (unlike her brothers) and was instead forced to assist with household chores.  At the age of 17, she moved from her home in Tehrathum in Eastern Nepal to Kathmandu to work as a carpet weaver.

Within a year in the city, Indira was married to a Thanka painter, but his work was irregular and proved no return. Their earnings together were barely enough for rent.  On the brink of destitution, her husband took out a loan and moved to Malaysia in search of better work. His efforts were unfruitful and anything he earned was used to pay back his loan.
