We are lucky, those of us in Fair Trade, we get to see, every day, through the eyes of others around the world whose cultures are very different from ours. We get to engage in diversity and learn about different visions of how humans engage in the world and with nature. I find that so nurturing but I am constantly challenged to lay down my western conditioning and allow for their perspective and deep knowledge to filter in and change me.
People often say to me, “you have done so much for Nepal,” to which my only response is, “and they have done so much for us.” The folks we work with in Nepal have changed how I walk in the world. They have allowed me to be more fluid, more accepting and more present in the moment. From a Western perspective work in Nepal can be frustrating at times as weddings, festivals, planting fields and time for mourning don’t always fall into our shipment schedules or even seasons of selling. But amazingly, the work all gets done and life is allowed to dominate instead of timelines. This is the beauty that has been shared with me. And for that, I am incredibly grateful.
I have, through these past 35+ years working in Nepal, watched as Westerners have come in and tried to set up small “factories” with a 9-5 schedule to “help” Nepalis by giving them “work”. I have seen many of these attempts fail in a flurry of frustration on both sides. I’ve tried to explain that there are rhythms in Nepal that need to be respected and honored. They are far from “lazy” or “not committed to work”. They instead understand the balance of combining family, spiritual and cultural needs with work. Letting the rhythm happen while working together requires trust and knowing that they understand what they need to be whole. There is a deeper process at work than just coming to do a “job.” Forcing them into a Western perspective of “work first” then “life” doesn’t work in these ancient and rich cultures. We can learn a lot from that rhythm.
I just finished reading a great book called “Sandtalk-How Indigenous Thinking Can Save The World” by Aboriginal scholar Tyson Yunkaporta where he addresses so much of this. He exposes how in the West, we often go into solving a problem by “doing” before understanding and before respecting the deep relationships and cultural knowledge that exist and need to be honored before we even begin to act. My experience in Nepal continually teaches me how true this is. I believe that one aspect of the success of our business has been because we have listened and learned and connected deeply with those we work with before taking action.
This is all to say that as we engage in the “work” of Fair Trade we need to constantly be reminded to step back and learn from our partners and understand that our Western way of being in the world is only one perspective. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to learn the richness of connection through our maker partners each day. If we are open to their teachings and wisdom, it can carry us into a much more connected and community-oriented, a more “life” oriented way of being in the world and hopefully one that is more sustainable for all.

From the beginning, Ganesh Himal has considered the majority of its clothing to be gender fluid, though the term that we used for many years was “Uni-Sex”. Our focus was on making comfortable, long-lasting clothing, and beyond that, we let the customer decide what fit their body and style the best!In particular, our cotton pants and shirts have been loved and worn by all genders throughout the years.Recently, we have chosen to take the next step, and have de-gendered our shopping navigation on our website as a way to support a more inclusive shopping experience. Instead of dividing our clothing by Men/Women categories, the navigation will just be divided by clothing type (shirts, pants, etc). Environmental stewardship has been a core value of Ganesh Himal Trading since our founding in 1984. This commitment to the environment has inspired many of our products being made from recycled or sustainable material including our line of rubber purses. When we learned that the common disposal method of tires in Nepal is burning–a method that produced black billowing clouds of smoke-one of Ganesh Himal’s producer partners offered to purchase numerous tires in hopes of improving air quality. From these tires came the first of Ganesh Himal Trading’s tire bags which today has developed into over 30 products! The bags have become SO popular that the gentleman responsible for burning the tires now has a full-time job searching the Kathmandu valley for more tires.

Despite our efforts to create products responsibly, we continued to worry about the environmental impact of transporting goods halfway around the world. To mitigate this somewhat, we have used only recycled boxes, built a super insulated, energy-efficient warehouse on 40 acres that preserve pine and aspen forests and created as little waste as possible. In 2019 we sought to do more so we partnered with Eden Projects to plant trees and create viable jobs in Nepal to offset the impact of each of our shipments. As we seek to “offer current generations the ability to meet their needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” we are committed to paying for the planting and care of 4000 trees/year. This tree planting, through Eden Projects, will not only help produce beauty and sequester carbon, it will also provide Nepali’s, 70% of whom are forest dependent, with good paying jobs and an ability to stay on the land for years to come. We are thrilled to be a part of this work.

Covid-19 has pushed the world into unprecedented times of uncertainty, disruption and chaos. As often is the case, people living in poverty and hunger suffer the most. With the spread of the second wave, Covid-19 cases skyrocketed in Nepal with daily infection of 8000-10,000 cases being reported every day and there were strict lockdowns. As of today, Nepal is a level 3, as Covid rates, thanks to Omnicron, are rising once again.
When we initially set out to provide relief for the villages that were hit hard by Covid, we did not find any reports or broader national survey on hunger so we reconnected with our partner organizations and community leaders. We asked them, where is the greatest need where Conscious Connections Foundation (CCF) can help? Many reported that since the lockdown began, daily wage workers lost their main source of income and families had run out of money to buy food. The Nepali government has no social protection plans to safeguard livelihoods and the country was shocked when last year, the then prime minister K.P.Sharma Oli said “Nepalis have a natural, high immunity and people need not much worry about Covid- 19” while Nepali youth protested for better Covid testing, quarantine facilities for returning migrant workers and greater transparency from the government. With the lockdown being extended for months on end, hunger needs were immediate and immense.
The second wave in Nepal mirrored India’s Covid surge, as hospitals reported an overwhelming number of severe cases and a similar shortage of beds, oxygen and ventilators. The second wave created more uncertainty and especially for people in poverty who had already run out of their savings from the first wave.
During my initial research, our goal was to work with grassroots organizations focused on marginalized communities and vulnerable groups including single mothers and children, daily wage workers, disabled and vulnerable individuals, people experiencing homelessness, victims of gender-based violence and communities marginalized by systemic societal oppression.
In May, 2021 through a referral from a friend, we got in touch with Ayushma Rana who had recently lost her husband to the second Covid wave. She had been providing food and medicine to single mothers, children and people living in slums. Once we got CCF funds in Nepal, through Ayushma 65 families and 18 new mothers were supported with food parcels containing 10 kg of rice, 5 kg of lentils, 3 packets of salt, 1 kg of sugar, 24 small packets of biscuits, and 2 packets of mixed beans. This food ration would be sufficient for 1 month but we take solace in knowing that no one has to sleep on an empty stomach for some time.
We had previously worked with Kusum Hiteri Foundation, a passionate husband-and-wife duo who have been working relentlessly to feed homeless and day laborer families during the first lockdown. Every day Kusum and her husband cook, pack free meals for 80-90 people in Lalitpur, Nepal. I had a brief chat with Kusum recently and she told me by now she knows all the regulars by name. The construction laborers said that, despite lockdown rules getting relaxed, there is no work for them as tourism and construction sectors have taken a hit due to Covid. One of the biggest economic sectors in Nepal is tourism which provides direct and indirect jobs to 4 million people. She claimed that some father’s come for free meals to lessen the food load on their families so mothers and children have more food at home.
Most daily wage workers live in the central areas of Kathmandu because these are areas where they usually gather to find work for the day. These communities mostly work in construction, plumbing, in households, as porters, and as roadside vendors. The majority of them come from villages in search of a better life for themselves and their families. These workers have families that are dependent on their income.
Another grassroots organization we partnered with was Menz Foundation. It is run by Menaz Khan who has a working station in Thamel, a central hub of tourism in Kathmandu with 5-6 volunteers cooking, packing and managing the people who come for free meals every day.
A month before the Covid pandemic started, Menaz Khan lost his father. His goal was to feed people as a way to remember and celebrate his father. He continued working on feeding people and through his experience of interacting with people, he came across individuals who were drinking water and sugar to survive.
Before the distribution begins, the volunteers call out the names of recipients to come and collect food. The volunteers said, “The people are not afraid of Covid, they are afraid of being hungry”. If people have enough food, then they can stay home and be safe, rather than in crowds seeking food.
Nilam Poudel is a trans woman who is working for the LGBTQ+ community in Nepal. She is a model for Ganesh Himal Trading and also extensive experience working as a make-up artist, fashion organizer, and she has recently volunteered with Ganesh Himal Trading’s non-profit, Conscious Connections Foundation.
Through her leadership with CCF, we have been able to distribute food rations to LGBTQ communities in rural parts of Nepal who have been hit hard by Covid. Because of prejudice and stigma, many trans people have been without food and shelter, and this only intensified from the conditions that the pandemic has created over the past few years. Through the help of CCF, Nilam begin to take overnight trips to Saptari, Ithari, Jhapa, Birgunj to distribute relief to these trans individuals. 24 years ago our son, Cameron Norbu Attwood Conner, was born as a bright and shining star into this world. He’s traveled many times back and forth to Nepal with us, happily been squished in with Nepali products in the car and even spent the better part of a year doing earthquake relief in Nepal after graduating from high-school. We have been co-conspirators in creating our non-profit the Conscious Connections Foundation and he’s now working as a community organizer in Dallas, TX while he waits for Covid to abate so he can do his year long Watson Fellowship outside the US studying “The Commons”. For all of that enthusiasm and work we couldn’t be more proud. BUT, my bragging rights this time are about something different!This January a new book called “The Commoner’s Catalog for Changemaking” was published and Cameron’s research and writing were a big part of this. As author, David Bollier, comments in his acknowledgements “The Commoner’s Catalog for Changemaking could not have gotten far without the fierce commitment and careful research and writing of Cameron Conner, a recently coined Watson Fellow whose research plans were abruptly suspended by the pandemic.” It is for this that I claim bragging rights! I know how much effort he poured into this and to see it in print is fantastic.
So what does this catalog have to do with Fair Trade? I would say everything and I think each of you should carry this book in your store! This book’s goal is to help us connect with each other and “learn how we can prioritize people’s needs over market extraction, steward the earth, relocalize the economy and build new institutions of empowerment” . It “points the way towards an economics of sufficiency, a politics of fairness, and a culture of belonging”. That is what Fair Trade is about.
So, make a mom proud and check out this book and read Cameron’s article below! You will be inspired, delighted, informed and transformed. Realizing we are part of a larger movement of change is empowering and seeing others who are doing it in areas outside of fair trade just shows us how building a new world of connection, belonging and fairness is growing and change is happening. The Commoner’s Catalog for Changemaking

One of my earliest childhood memories is being carried on my mother’s hip through the streets of Kathmandu, walking side by side with Chunta Nepali, one of my parent’s business partners in Nepal. As we slowly make our way through the streets of the Thamel neighborhood, we pause to meet with store owners, check in on a new product, or engage in discussions long since lost to memory. I’m placed gently on the floor and left to play with the other children whose parents have brought them to work. Together, we’re left to explore amidst the stacks of beautiful handcrafted textiles and colorful plastic packing twine.As a child of the Fair Trade movement, I was exposed on a daily basis to the possibility that a world could exist in which human beings treat one another with dignity and respect; where relationships were the linchpin of a business rather than Return on Investment. As I grew older, these ideas stayed with me and have led me to explore where else we can encourage these qualities of reciprocity and respect to grow in our world.
It was out of this curiosity and possibility that in the Spring of 2020 I began working on a book with the Schumacher Center for a New Economics with David Bollier. This project, ultimately called _The Commoner’s Catalog for Changemaking_ was born of a simple realization: That we need to build a new world of possibilities right now_. Inspired by the format and sensibility of _The Whole Earth Catalog_ of the early 1970s, this Catalog has a similar goal: to help people build a new world, on their own terms, against the grain of a dominant culture.
There are scores of system-change projects alive and well just below the surface of our world, but much of mainstream politics and media regards them as too small, local, and trivial to matter… and many at the heart of this work often do not sense the broader mycelial networks of which they are a part. The Commoner’s Catalog seeks to remedy this problem.
The Catalog expands on the grand, transformational power of social collaboration that I saw every day within Ganesh Himal Trading, and interweaves it with the parallel groundbreaking work being done in agricultural commons and digital spaces, in care collectives and gift economies, in urban settings and finance, among many other realms.
The Catalog’s many profiles and stories are loosely grouped in 25 thematic sections. There are sections on water, land, rethinking economics, law and the commons, the more-than-human world, urban commons, peer production, artistic commons, and many others. In collecting them together, our hope is not only to bridge these revolutionary ideas, but also inspire new commoners to cultivate new branches and buds of their own.

Sometimes things are just meant to be. It’s more than coincidence, it’s more like destiny. That’s what happened in Sertung, Nepal in 2015. We were doing earthquake assessment in an area to the west of Langtang on a 12-day trek that few had traveled since before the Maoist revolution 20 years earlier. We trekked directly east of the epicenter of the enormous earthquake of April 25, 2015, wanting to understand what relief had come to these remote villages.As usual, our beloved friend and guide Ram Karki, with who we’ve trekked thousands of miles, was our fearless leader along with his son Pradeep. We set off into this area armed with solar lamps and questions of how Conscious Connections Foundation (CCF) could be of help. Midway through our trek our cook collapsed falling backward into a stream and Pradeep thought he had died. Running to the next village of Sertung, I asked in my simple Nepali, for the local medic. That is where the serendipity happened. I was led by two young girls to the home of Yogendra & Pema Tamang, the Certified Medical Assistant of the Village who helped us revive the cook (who we later found out was suffering from alcohol withdrawal!)
With a warm bed and some scolding from Pema, the cook survived, and because we had to lay over longer in Sertung than we had planned we interviewed Yogendra about what their needs were after the earthquake. He said they had received a few tarps, but their village was too remote to be the recipient of
much aid. We asked him what they needed and he said “good steady income so they could rebuild”. That’s when my Ganesh Himal hat popped on and we began to discuss their handwork skills. Together we began the exploration of potential products they could make and now 6 years later Ganesh Himal has purchased over $56,000 dollars directly from village women who have used it to rebuild and send their children to school. Because of this serendipity, you get to experience Sertungs handwork when you purchase their beautiful recycled sari-wrapped trivets, bowls, coasters, baskets, and trays. All because our cook passed out! Such serendipity.
CCF has also worked directly with Pema & Yogendra over these years to fund menstrual hygiene & emergency first aid training and distribute reusable menstrual kits to over 500 women and girls in the area. Many of you have helped fund that work!
Developing products in such a remote area is tricky & challenging. Items have to be lightweight to transport the two-day walk (for Nepali’s) to the nearest road. That’s why we work with recycled saris. But also developing products in such a remote area can present tremendous opportunity to work with ancient skills. That is how we developed these new market baskets you see featured today.
Nepali’s traditionally carry items in a handwoven basket (doko). Villagers either make their own or purchase them from someone nearby. These doko’s arephenomenally strong & the weaving beautiful, but they are in danger of being replaced by duffels, large plastic bags, or encroaching roads. Always being one to want to revive ancient skills I recently asked if there was a doko maker in Sertung and if they could think of anything besides bamboo to work with (bamboo is extremely difficult to import from Nepal). Serendipity again as Yogendra’s uncle is a skilled doko maker and agreed to teach the women of Tamang Handicrafts his skill. Yogendra came up with the idea of using strapping tape (about the same width of a bamboo strip and incredibly strong) and voila, these beautiful, long-lasting market baskets were born. The staff of Ganesh Himal Trading each has one and they are a tremendous success!So here’s to destiny and to long-lasting relationships. The villagers of Sertung have become a part of our family and we continue to look to their skills and determination for inspiration. We feel it was our destiny to work with them and in Nepal in general and we love those relationships. We also love our relationships with you. She aims to continue her father’s business and to help in further growing it.“Due to restrictions and lockdown, currently I have been taking online classes but physical classes would have been more interactive with no problems of internet service. However, our classes are not affected so I feel happy about it. I like mathematics and I plan to do Bachelors in Business Administration with specialization in marketing.”“The lockdown have few pros despite of all the cons. In current situation we have been seeing various businesses emerge: many of them found online medium fruitful and are making a living out of it. So, in future I am looking forward to expanding this business and delivering in local areas. My brother is doing IT and is less interested in ceramics so I want to take our ancestral skill forward. During this lockdown I learnt to make traditional – oil & cotton wick lamps (diyo) and I want to gradually learn to make varieties of ceramics item in my leisure.”She wants to tackle poverty of her periphery and to help make a prosperous community. The Women behind our Fair Trade Paper

September 2021Sometimes things just don’t work out, even in Fair Trade. So we can either pivot and get creative or dwell in the loss of a good idea. Well we aren’t very good at dwelling in loss at Ganesh Himal Trading but we have learned how to be good at pivoting.
Since 1986, we have worked with a group of amazing women who create beautiful journals, bags and cards with handmade Nepali paper. Originally working for a project created by UNICEF, their organization Bhaktapur Craft Printers (BCP) fell apart in 2014 when UNICEF outsourced their buying to another company and BCP lost 75% of their sales. As the managers of BCP left and with their expertise started their own paper companies it left behind a group of women who had for over 20 years created the products that BCP sold but who had never run a business. These women were in essence stranded without work. Because we knew them personally and because we believed in what they were achieving through their work, Ganesh Himal Trading stepped in to help them re-organize and provide them with continued work. That was how Bhaktapur Women’s Craft Paper (BWCP) was born in 2015 (right before the earthquake!).
It has been such an interesting journey with these makers, many of whom are older women, as they have tried to understand how to create a business and take on all of the tasks of running a business while also making the products. They have done an amazing job and although it has not been easy on many levels they have continued to produce orders and receive income every 2 months for GHT since the dismantling of the UNICEF project of BCP. We have watched their children grow and go to school and even go to graduate school.
But as I stated in the first sentence, things don’t always work out and as much as we would have liked to see this group of women stay together as one business there were too many personal difficulties that arose. In July of 2020 the difficulties started to interfere with their work and so it was determined that the best way forward was to split the group and create a new company. This is how Creative Women Craft Paper (CWCP) was born.
Now Ganesh Himal works with both groups developing new products for CWCP and splitting the orders of the older products that they used to make together. Each group tried so hard to make it work out but sometimes that just doesn’t happen so instead of abandoning one group we got creative. Now each group is doing well and paper products are selling better than ever. Their lives are easier because they don’t have inner conflicts at work, each group is receiving good orders and we are developing different products so that the groups don’t compete with one another. So, this year we have introduced a new line of journals using the spectacular nature photographs of Nathan Peck. This is an entirely new look for Ganesh Himal and we hope you enjoy them. They are featured this month in a promotional sale because they are so indicative of the beauty of fall.
This story is just a reminder of how difficulties can be creatively solved and how Fair Trade is not always an easy path but if we keep each other’s well-being at the forefront we can move forward to positive futures together.

September 17, 2021I love Fair Trade now more than ever. I feel so wrapped in care, in community and in visions of the possibility of how we can all live together in the world. Strange since we are also surrounded by massive uncertainty with Covid, huge political divisions, and huge income inequalities. Still, there is something about Fair Trade that helps me navigate, helps me stay on course through it all and I see it now with greater depth. It involves standing beside one another, extending our arms, helping each other up and living into a future where we can all be there for one another and thrive.
I have watched
- as Fair Trade retail businesses plummeted with Covid and their communities gathered to support them, showing them they are a treasured part of their community,
- as makers in Nepal and other countries had stability due to their long term fair trade partnerships allowing them reach out to others who were suffering and provide them with life giving support,
- as store owners supported wholesalers with understanding and increased purchases despite the uncertainties,
- as retailers, wholesalers and makers got creative and collaborative rather than small and competitive.
It hasn’t been easy, not one bit of it, but it has shown me the power of community and relationship. When we have others to stand beside us we know we can make it through and when we have a common thread to hold onto it is like a life rope and it can pull us through, the toughest of times, together.
Thank you for sharing the thread, for being a part of such a vibrant and caring community and for being part of a bigger vision for the world. Never let go of the thread.
