Surrounding us there is beauty and there is fear. The majesty of the mountains above us and the valleys below inspire awe in the natural world. The simplicity and lack of modernity in these isolated valleys of Sankhuwasabha, Nepal, equally inspire wonderment at human survival and endurance. Tucked snugly on the northeastern edge of Nepal, Barun Valley National Park is home to towering snow capped mountain peaks, high waterfalls and lush green forests that offer a remote wilderness experience that has been relatively untouched by humans.

The inhabitants of this valley are Lhomi people, an indigenous community that have lived and subsisted on farming barley, potatoes and millet and traded wild herbs and plants for medicine for centuries. Living in difficult terrain with limited resources has meant many Lhomi women endure additional issues during menstruation. Historically, the women have been known to “free bleed” and/or use scraps of cloth which are hard to come by. In more recent years, the younger women have taken to using disposable sanitary pads but these are expensive to procure and their disposal leads to environmental challenges.

Chhing Lhomi – Vice Chairperson of National Indigenous Federation (NWIF)

Given these circumstances, the people from and around the region have struggled to connect with organizations or networks for support and resources. This need was highlighted by Chhing Lhomi, vice chairperson of National Indigenous Federation (NWIF), the chairperson of Lhomi Women Welfare Forum (LWWF), and the Himalayan Indigenous Society Nepal (HIS-Nepal). These organizations strive to work on behalf of indigenous women through social justice and women’s empowerment programs. Through my conversations with her, she was able to express the value and need for education on menstrual health and hygiene for the Lhomi women. That is how we set our plan to go to Sankhuwasabha.

As CCF’s Menstrual Hygiene program manager, I approached the CCF Board to see if they would be willing to work on this project. Since this program fell directly within CCF’s mission, board members talked with Chhing Lhomi and myself and agreed to fund the trainings, kits, and distribution of the CCF funded & newly completed Menstrual Hygiene manual.

With 2200 pounds of goods consisting of 3000 Menstrual Cloth Kits (2-day pads, 1 night pad, 5 liners, 1 soap, 2 underwear, 1 bag), fabrics, menstrual hygiene manuals and stationery supplies, we set out for Khat Bari, a region in Arun Valley. Preparation for this undertaking was challenging and was years in the making. To prepare we:

Preparing kits for the Arun Valley

Preparing kits for the Arun Valley

    • Procured the PUL (water proof) fabric that prevents the pads from leaking from China,

    • Bought all the materials for the kits, refining the pattern every time we got feedback,

    • Trained four women for two years in how to sew menstrual kits (giving them sustainable income that uplifts them from poverty)

    • Created and published a Nepal centric Menstrual Health and Hygiene training manual in both Nepali and English for participants and communities to have as a resource and,

    • Figured out the logistics for transporting everything into a remote area with no telecommunication or roads during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Each step of the way was carefully executed. With support and funding from Conscious Connections Foundation, a four-woman team of leaders, and the support of the local Lhomi village women, we were extremely well prepared to make this expedition happen. Together, our goal was to raise awareness on Menstrual Health and Hygiene and introduce rural girls/women to reusable, environmentally sustainable products while at the same time teaching them how to make their own cloth pads, helping their communities become more self-reliant. With that mission in mind, our group of four women, two locals, Somi & Samjhana and Jenny Shakya and myself took a 12 day trip into the Arun Valley.

The Nepali version of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles – We transported over 3000 Menstrual Kits almost 100 miles.

Together, we covered 80-90 miles hiking through deep gorges and waterfalls along Arun River. The Arun river enters from Tibet at an elevation of about 3500 meters (11,500 feet) and flows south across the district, forming one of the world’s deepest valleys relative to Makalu mountain at 8481 meters (27,825 feet) to the west and Kanchenjunga mountain at 8586 meters (21,869 feet) to the east. As we hiked up and down the evergreen trails, we were greeted by ‘Tashi Delek’ a Tibetan phrase which means, “May you be happy in the here and now” by friendly locals who asked us where we were headed as they sped past us on their daily walks.

The locals we interacted with were friendly and had a matter of fact way of looking at life. Despite heavy rains and frequent landslides that blocked roads and made life precarious, they seem to be more joyful and accepting of the vicissitudes of life.

In rural societies with limited access to technology and modernity, people seem to come together to help each other thrive and survive. As we moved from village to village, the locals helped us find a caravan of mules – the primary means of bringing the much needed menstrual supplies into the hinterlands of Sankhuwasabha. We started our first of three training sessions in Hattiya village followed by a similar training in Lingum village. We were welcomed by the Bhot Khola District Department of Education. Women pre-organized by Chhing Lhomi and myself came from eighteen neighboring villages to the trainings. We were interested in knowing their views, beliefs about menstruation and teaching them what we knew in the process. The participants were from all ages from 14 year old girls to 60-70 year old grandmothers. Lhomi women have less social and religious restrictions compared to Hindu women in Nepal, but still have limited access to menstrual products which makes them vulnerable to menstrual related illnesses.

Menstruation is considered a natural process within the realms of Buddhism and some Lhomi women see menstrual blood as a powerful tool during Buddhist tantric rituals. Several female Tibetan deities, Dhakinis, are associated with menstruation but this portrayal is not widely acknowledged in Tibetan culture. Palden Lhamo is an icon in Tibetan Buddhism and represents the protector goddess whose wisdom and compassion overcome every obstacle. She is depicted riding a mule across a sea of menstrual blood serving as a metaphor for fertility.

Despite the strong female Dhakinis in Buddhist tradition, the Lhomi women talked about how gendered roles still suppress women in Lhomi culture. Giving space during these trainings to the voices of the indigenous Lhomi women was a vital part of the learning process. Room was given for them to talk about their personal health issues without feeling embarrassed or ashamed.  Samjhana Lhomi, our trainer from Bhot Khola helped translate some of the topics into Lhomi and made the topic of menstruation lively with shared laughs and personal menstruation stories. Sonam, a Lhomi woman, said how her husband loves it when she has her periods and the room burst into laughter.

Many women also claimed to ignore heavy menstrual bleeding and pain they feel during periods because they think it’s a normal part of menstruating. Many claimed that their husbands did not know anything about menstruation and they were too shy to share any information about their bodies. One of the moments that stuck with me was how many women said they used dry leaves & rags and ended up with bacterial or viral infections which got worse because there were no hospitals or clinics in their village.

    IMG_4681.jpg

We worked on the basics of how menstruation happens, talked about the difference between gender and sex, female and male anatomy, the reproductive cycle, menstrual hygiene and about the pros and cons of different contraceptives in Nepal. The basics were a good introduction to the Lhomi women, as most had never had any kind of formal education and this was the first of its kind in Bhot Khola, Sankhuwasabha. Many expressed that it was the first time they heard about eggs in their bodies and were fascinated by the journey of an egg in the ovaries to the uterus. Most heard the word, ‘hormones’ for the first time and nurse Samjhana Lhomi did an excellent job explaining the complex relationship between hormones and menstruation.

    IMG-6916.jpeg

As the saying goes, ‘Teach a woman to fish and you feed her for a lifetime’. We spent the second day of the training teaching each participant to make their own cloth pads. This training was a huge success overall because many learned how to cut, hand stitch and make their own cloth pads. Sanitary pads are very expensive in this region because they come all the way from India and cost Rs. 150 ($1.25), an expense most families find hard to bear. We also distributed PUL Waterproof cloth pad kits which consisted of 2 day pads, 1 night pad, 5 inner liners, 1 soap, 2 underwear, and 1 carrying bag to each participant and had them take more kits to distribute when they returned to their villages. Then each participant who came to the training, in turn, pledged to teach women and girls in their village community, thus widening the impact of the training and encouraging each participant to become a village leader. As I’m writing this blog post, we’ve had 7 villages send us photos of them teaching their community on how to make these cloth pads.

After attending our trainings, women returned to their own villages to conduct their own trainings and distribute menstrual kits we had supplied them with

Hiking past deep gorges descending through hardwood, conifer forests that weave through villages,  the word “Seva” comes to mind, Seva is the Sanskrit word for selfless service, a genuine compassion for others and a genuine desire to uplift those around you without expecting anything in return. I see this work as a Seva on both sides of the spectrum. We were receiving as much generosity, kindness and  knowledge from the Lhomi people as we were giving. Despite changes in our plans due to landslides, thunderstorms and road blasts, the locals were nonchalant about the external factors that they couldn’t possibly control.

I feel that the essence of our trip was to learn to be in the ‘here and the now.’ I’m so grateful to have received this lesson from the Lhomi people, and I give thanks to everyone that believed in us and made this work of distributing pads and menstrual education to the Arun Valley possible.

What a difference two months can make. In early April we were celebrating that CCF’s Nepal team had reached over 3500 women and girls in Nepal giving them access to Menstrual Hygiene information, education and supplies that will forever change their lives and the lives of their children and communities. When CCF’s Nepal team led this training in Eastern Nepal in early April, Covid was almost a non-event. Today I am writing about how Nepal is suffering from the highest transmission rate of Covid in the world. It happened overnight and with a vengeance not really conceived of before.

In early June the New York Times, BBC and sources in Nepal reported:

    • Over half a million Covid cases and a 44% infection rate,
    • A 668% increase in Covid infections over a 2-week period, the highest in the world
    • 7454+ deaths, numbers that experts believe deeply undercount the total
    • for weeks now, 40 percent of the tests conducted have been positive (up to 90% in the remote area of Dolpo)
    • less than 2% of the population has been fully vaccinated and India has halted all exports of vaccine to Nepal leaving them a million doses short
    • a population of over 30 million with approximately 1 doctor per 100,000 people
    • hospitals beyond capacity (and beyond most people’s financial reach), limited testing, oxygen or hospital beds,
    • little National leadership so community leaders are having to step forward

Nepal is currently in a months-long lockdown due to the rapid resurgence of the COVID 19 virus and its highly contagious new variants. As a result, the economy has plummeted and those who rely on daily wages and the informal economy are the hardest hit. All businesses, except those providing food, have been closed. Government assistance is minimal.

In the face of this Ganesh Himal Trading and our partners in Nepal once again were lucky to get a shipment hastily (but safely) out of Nepal before the lockdown on May 6th. This means our producers received money, and for some advances, so that they can weather the lockdown. But, groups like the Association for Craft Producers who have large operational costs have, once again suffered terribly.

In late May I received a letter from my dear friend Meera Bhatterai, Founder and Executive Director of ACP in which she stated (among many other things):

“In order to curb further infections and deaths from COVID, the government has again imposed a lockdown in most places of the country. Kathmandu, the capital city where we and most of our producers are based, continues to top the chart with the highest number of infections in the country. At ACP, a total of 14 staff and artisans tested COVID positive within a short span of initial two weeks.  More of our employees/ artisans and their family members have been infected since then. Sadly, some of them have lost their spouses and family members. Unfortunately the government has also barred the insurance companies from the renewal of covid insurance which we had done for 320 of our employees and artisans last year.

The current situation of the country has made us very vulnerable- emotionally, mentally and financially… Our producers are engulfed with extreme fear and do not want to risk their or family’s health and safety. Due to the extreme mental pressure many of them are not working at home as well.  Ironically, they miss out on work when they need it most.

We are not certain how long the current lockdown will be extended or how things will go after it is lifted. From mere sustenance last year with the help and support of our partners, we are once again forced to think whether we can survive further. We are in a precarious situation.”

Ganesh Himal Trading was able to give ACP a $7500 advance on their order for July and our partner non-profit Conscious Connections Foundation has another $6600 grant that will be provided to them this week for operational costs and producer support. All in the hopes that they will be able, along with other buyers and development partners’ support, to hang on through this severe crisis.

Other producer partners have not been spared Covid and several knitting communities in Nepalgunj (along the Indian border) and from Barpak have needed assistance due to the Covid outbreak. CCF has been able to provide 70 of those families with healthy food for 10-15 days (at a cost of less than $20/family) and will be watching their situation closely. The rest of our producer groups report that they are doing fine and working safely from home. Some have even received the vaccine, so that is good. Our plan is to have a shipment leave Nepal at our regularly scheduled time in July but with very limited international flights and many potential safety issues we will need to be very flexible.

Our other emergency response to Covid in Nepal, through CCF, has been focused on day laborers and those who have no income or savings and risk starvation. We feel that helping these people stay home and fed and off the streets is one way we can help to stem the transmission of the virus.  Once again we have an incredible resource in Nepal through our longtime partner Kesang Yudron. Since May 24 with Kesang’s help, CCF has been able to fund (at a cost of approximately $20/family for 10-15 days of food) the distribution of food, cooking fuel, money and masks into the hands of:

    • 70 knitting families
    • 65 families and 18 new moms in the slum areas of Kathmandu
    • 100+ families in Kathmandu desperately in need of food through the Hiteri foundation
    • 50 transgendered women who have no family, government or community support
    • 20 families in Bhaktapur who were in dire need of food

CCF has will also be funding Covid relief prevention and care in the area of Sindupolchowk through our long time partner TEAM Nepal.

The takeaway from all of this is that Covid is still very much a threat in the world and one that can rise quickly and unexpectedly through variants and a feeling of complacency. Nepal needs our continued financial help to move through this second wave, but what they really need is vaccines. Poor people there, similar to those here in the US and Canada, simply do not have the luxury of social distancing or staying home. We must pressure our governments to supply vaccines and get large populations immunized. Experts say the only way to control the spread of the virus is vaccinating as many people as quickly as possible. But the government has been struggling to secure vaccines. On June 3 the US promised 7 million doses to countries in Asia but it is unclear how many Nepal will receive.

As always, Ganesh Himal Trading, Conscious Connections Foundation and our partners in Nepal are so grateful for all the ways that you provide us with support. It is because of you that we can work together to make it through these unbelievable difficulties that they have faced over the years. I want you to know that each and every one of our producers is so grateful to you all. It is difficult for them to see the light at the end of the tunnel right now but your support means everything as they wander through this darkness.

Hopefully the next letter I write will be full again of hope and promise but for now we have to deal with the situation at hand and that means clasping hands and moving forward. Thank you for being a part of our community and thanks for your continued support and understanding.

    Namaste,

    Denise

    3500 Nepali Women are
    in the Know!

Sometimes you just have to stop and say WOW! Appreciate that the universe has conspired to bring things together just perfectly and be thankful for all the hard work, trust and support of so many (including many of you) that has gotten us all to this point.

What are we celebrating? That over 3500 women and girls in Nepal have gotten access to information, education and supplies that will forever change their lives and the lives of their children and communities. It’s a long story but GHT’s non-profit (Conscious Connections Foundation) and the wonderful team put together by our project manager in Nepal, Kesang Yudron, has, in the last 3 years:

    • trained unskilled Nepali women to sew quality reusable menstrual pad kits (over 4500 kits have been made since March 2018)
    • put on interactive training programs that provide basic and accessible Menstrual Hygiene training to both urban and rural women, and
    • produced  a comprehensive “Nepalcentric” highly illustrated, simple language, menstrual hygiene manual (written, illustrated and graphically designed by an all Nepali team),

In August of 2020, Kesang was approached by the Lhomi women of the remote Makalu region in far eastern Nepal, near the Tibetan border. They knew they wanted menstrual hygiene education and asked CCF and our Nepali team if we would fund and provide in depth training on women’s health and menstruation to 54 women leaders from 18 of their villages. Along with the training they asked if CCF would fund the production of 3000 reusable menstrual hygiene kits to distribute to women and girls in these villages. These kits would be given out by the local leaders when they returned to their villages to do local training. They also wanted instruction on how to hand sew their own cloth pads for future use! CCF and Kesang said YES and even with Covid the planning started! I am amazed to say that the Lhomi project was just completed on April 9!

The Lhomi project was CCF’s largest project in menstrual hygiene training to date and our amazing program manager, Kesang (also a producer partner of GHT), led the entire project. Kesang and her team of 3 other Nepali women (2 Lhomi-1 a nurse) trekked over 12 days through extremely difficult terrain with 18 donkeys carrying 3000 kits and 300 Nepali menstrual hygiene manuals. They were welcomed warmly and enthusiastically by all.

Kesang returned on April 9th with stories of women, who for the first time ever, were beginning to understand the wonders of what happens in their bodies, learning that we carry eggs and have hormones and that menstruation is the amazing process that gives us the chance to have children, or not! This information is, for the first time, being explained in a simple but comprehensive manner to women who have never gotten the chance to learn about it and they are so excited to receive it. It may not seem like much to us but it is life changing for them.

Kesang will soon do a full report on the program but for now, we celebrate the accomplishment and the communities that got us this far. Many of you have done fundraisers, put out jars for donations and supported “period Paddi”! Look where you have gotten us! We couldn’t have done it without your support.

Kesang said that her biggest learning from this project was how important it is to get this information to the women in these really remote areas. So, now, after 3 years of much hard work, we have all of the pieces in place: the kits, the training manual and the training experience, and will be able to reach out much more easily to these remote areas where few NGO’s go.

This is what I love about Fair Trade…a community that sees how valuable giving women access to skills, information and decision making is, not only for themselves, but for their families, communities and the environment.  Ganesh Himal, CCF and our partners in Nepal know that when women have access to information, economy and the understanding and control of their bodies, they can make informed decisions based on their own unique circumstances and needs. Your continued support of our fair trade business and our non-profit work and your understanding about the value of knowledge and its impact on people’s lives is greatly appreciated.

Look for more on this work but for now enjoy the successes you have helped make possible and these fantastic pictures just in from the Lhomi project training. Thank you again for your undying support.

    Namaste

    Finding the Golden Threads

    By Denise Attwood
    Co-Owner of Ganesh Himal Trading

Weavings are my passion. So much so that I have no more room on my walls or floors or in my house for any more. I love their textures, patterns, unbelievable strengths and extreme vulnerabilities, I love that they sail us across seas and swaddle our babies. I love that multitudes of single fragile threads are combined in a way that they can hold water or catch fish, that the patterns woven into rugs can tell stories and be passed along through generations.

But weavings, even the strongest, have to be cared for, and tended to, and sometimes can’t endure. Their strength relies not only on the collective whole but on the integrity of each of their fibers and the care of their owner. They are highly vulnerable even in their strength; one cut, not repaired, can render a weaving useless or can cause its unraveling. And then what? That is yet another of their gifts, they can be woven anew.

Right now things seem to be unraveling as we cycle on through Covid, political strife and extreme racial injustice and immense loss. But with this unraveling comes great opportunity, if we look closely we can glimpse the beauty of each strand, often hidden or not acknowledged, or maybe never used and with care, patience and attention we can weave something new. When we step back and really look we can find the golden thread that as Terry Tempest Williams so eloquently states “shows us “the through line” that weaves the world back together again.

Time for each of us to get out the darning needle or the loom, finger the threads and rework the patterns anew. Time to create a weave much richer, more vibrant and much more inclusive. Time to really see those threads that have been “pushed aside, dismissed or straight up erased” (as Tekia talks about below) and feature them boldly in the weave. I feel I am in good company. Here’s to an amazing 2021 full of deep learning and reweaving together.

    Namaste,

    Denise

    Interview with Denise Attwood,
    Co-owner of Ganesh Himal Trading

    by Meredith Pietzman
    Fair Trade Winds

What inspired you to start Ganesh Himal Trading and work with artisans in Nepal?

When we arrived in Kathmandu in 1984, Ric and I had no idea that the experience would be a defining moment in our lives. Having just graduated from Huxley college of Environmental  Studies at Western Washington University, Nepal was one of our first stops on an 8 month trip to explore what other countries were doing in regards to the environment. Prior to departing on a month-long trek through the Himalayas, we bought two wool sweaters from a Tibetan refugee family. We were amazed by how well the sweaters performed in harsh conditions and when we raved about them to the family, they replied: “Do you know how we can market them?”

Unprepared for that response we weren’t sure what to do but recognized that putting money directly in people’s hands allowed them to build the lives they wanted. So, with an initial investment of $400, we bought sweaters and socks and shipped them home to Spokane, Washington. Six months later, returning from our trip, and surprised to see the boxes had arrived, we presented a community slideshow and put the Nepali goods out for sale. People loved it! They loved the items and the concept that these families were making them to send their children to school. It became apparent to us that providing a fair wage and access to the U.S. market could offer economic empowerment. This could change lives. We had made the initial contacts and decided to dive in.

Our venture soon turned into a full time business. With the goal of supporting work that enhances people’s lives and traditions, we began establishing partnerships with small cottage industries and development aid projects. When we chose our partners in Nepal we looked for groups that were focused on women, the environment, refugees and other marginalized groups. We wanted people to have a place at the economic table and we saw this possibility through creating solid, caring mutually beneficial relationships through trade. When we started in 1984, there was no “Fair Trade Federation” or “fair trade criteria.” We used our own principles to guide our work:

    • treat people with respect,
    • make sure they get a fair return for their work,
    • provide continuity over time along with safe working conditions, design assistance, and financial support.

At the heart of Ganesh Himal Trading is long term partnerships that empower each partner. We are committed to respectful and long term partnerships. We believe that building long lasting relationships based on trust, dialogue and mutual respect is key to community building and helps move us all toward a more equitable future.

Our partnerships are grounded in reciprocity. We work diligently to establish mutually beneficial relationships with our producers in Nepal by encouraging a balanced level of give and take. We work directly with producers as a team, expanding each other’s talents and ideas. We believe everyone’s insight and perspective is needed to create systems that address the changing nature of our world.

Striving for economic justice is where our business began. When Ganesh Himal Trading was established, we decided to seek out producer groups that worked with marginalized individuals (e.g. women and Tibetan refugees) so they could gain access to trading relationships for economic mobility. This has led to years of partnering with women producers to co-create a world where women have control over their money, are empowered to make their own decisions, and have a respected voice in all discussions. Overall, we believe that trade is interrelational and that access to trading relationships is key to enhancing people’s lives and traditions. After 36 years we are still firmly committed to this path.

How is Ganesh Himal Trading organized (i.e. Do the artisans work from home or go to a workshop, etc.)?

We work in partnership with 18 producer groups that employ hundreds of artisans from Kathmandu to the most remote rural areas in the country. Each group is organized based on how it works best for them. For example, many of the knitters work from home allowing them to tend to their families, knitting allows women to work for their own income in between caring for children and completing housework. But it does so much more.

For Ganesh Himal knits, women gather together in village or neighborhood teams, select a leader who can travel to get supplies, learn a new skill which gives them confidence, make money they can manage, discuss problems in their lives and community, all while staying at home. Their income earnings and greater confidence result in greater voice in their homes and communities resulting, over time in an increase in status and community leadership. This income gives them a greater voice and ultimately leads to more choice for them, their families and their children. Ganesh Himal also has created “social development funds” for each knitting group where an extra payment is made into a special fund that the women can manage together as a group. Some of these funds have been collectively used to pay for children’s school fees, funeral expenses and given as small loans to members to help pay for emergency services.

Most of Ganesh Himal Trading’s woven products come from The Association for Craft Producers (ACP).  ACP is a fair trade organization that provides design, marketing, management, and technical services to low income, predominantly women, Nepalese craft producers. Meera Bhatterai, founded ACP in 1984, with a vision to pay women directly, teach them how to price their work so as not to be exploited in the market & ultimately to give women a greater voice. Today, because of ACP, nearly 1000 women from 15 districts in Nepal have the opportunity to become more financially independent, and have gained more credibility in their communities through the production of their crafts. Each of these groups is set up according to what works best for their producers in their villages.

For example, The Lagankhal Weaving Group joined the Association of Craft Producers (ACP) in 1985 with the hope of earning money for their families and children.  Starting with four women who had no weaving skills, ACP trained the group in simple flat weaving. After receiving their training the group chose to create their own communal workshop near their homes in Kathmandu so that they could work in their spare time and be near their children when they needed them.  Since 1985 the group has expanded to thirteen women weavers, of which a majority are the main breadwinners in their families. Ganesh Himal Trading has worked with the Lagankhal Weaving Group since they joined ACP in 1985. We help them to design products and order from them every two months on a year round basis so that these women are constantly receiving orders and income. They make many of Ganesh Himal’s most popular and beautiful table runners, placemats and rugs.

The Lagankhal group chose to work in a rented space so that they could be close to their children and families.  After 25+ years their workspace had become run down yet their landlord was not interested in remodeling.  Ganesh Himal Trading knew how important the community workspace was to these women so in 2011 we agreed to raise $5000 to remodel it.  In partnership with our wholesale customers Ganesh Himal agreed to donate $2500 if our customers raised the other ½.  By January of 2012 the money was raised and with ACP’s leadership the workshop restoration was finished by October of 2012!  This was a wonderful collaborative process between Ganesh Himal Trading, our customers, ACP and the weavers.  Now they have a beautiful, well-lit workspace and it even survived the 2015 earthquakes!

Each group has their own story about where they want to work and why. It is their decision what works best for them and Ganesh Himal Trading works alongside them to help them make their work spaces safe and comfortable for them within their cultural settings. Now our partner non-profit Conscious Connections Foundation (CCF) has also worked with artisans to help provide safe, earthquake resilient work spaces. In 2015 after the devastating earthquakes in Nepal CCF along with Ganesh Himal and many of our retail partners in North America, helped weavers who had lost their looms and homes in Kirtipur, Nepal, build a community weaving workshop that now not only provides a safe earthquake resistant workplace but also provides a community safe space in the event that another earthquake occurs.

There are so many other stories to share but I hope this gives a sense of how we work with artisans.

We know that every business has had to pivot during the pandemic. How has COVID impacted the way the artisans work (and/or how you work with them)?

Ganesh Himal Trading has had one continuous goal during Covid and that is to keep artisans working and getting paid in a safe environment. We are lucky in that many work in their homes which allowed them little exposure while they continued to work. For those who come into facilities to work it was harder since Nepal was in a complete lockdown for many months. Facilities for ACP had to be paid for and artisans and operating expenses needed to be paid. Since there were no PPP loans in Nepal, Ganesh Himal worked with our non-profit to raise funds for operational expenses in Nepal and was able to send $40,000 to ACP to help them survive during the lockdown. You can read my detailed blogpost on this relief here .

Usually GHT has shipments that leave every two months from Nepal and each artisan group has orders that are in those shipments. This allows them to continually receive income and ship orders. Covid changed that because we could not get flights for our goods out of Nepal for what would normally be our May 2020 shipment. Luckily that was the only shipment that had to be postponed and we stayed in close contact with all groups to make sure that if they needed funds to survive we would be there to help them out. Luckily they had each received large payments right before the lockdown in April and so all were able to survive. ACP was the group that had the largest operational expenses to maintain so that is where we focused most of our relief efforts for the artisans.

One thing I was very proud of with the groups that we work with is that because of our long term relationships with them they had resiliency. Now we are coming back to more of a “normal” shipping schedule and orders are coming and going more regularly.

What is your personal favorite product and why?

That is a tough question! I have so many. If I had to chose one item it would probably be our recycled sari placemats. I use them every day and they incorporate so much of what Ganesh Himal stands for. They are made by an amazing group of women who control their own money, they use recycled materials, I designed them, they are long-lasting (I think I have had one of my sets for 12 years) and they are beautiful. I love all of our products because they are not only beautiful but they are long lasting, affordable, many use recycled materials and all help marginalized makers create the world we all want to live in, one that is good for our families, our communities and our planet.

When women work, the impact of the investment is greatly multiplied. What benefits or positive changes have you seen in the communities where the artisans work and live?

There are many powerful stories to tell here but my favorite is the story of Laxmi Maharjan and the weavers of Kirtipur. Ganesh Himal has worked with them through the Association for Craft Producers since 1986.

Laxmi is a traditional weaver who never went to school but dreamed of sending her children to school.  Raised in a culture that never allowed her to handle or control any of the money made from her craft,  she understood that to be able to send her kids to school and pull her family out of poverty she needed to control the money from her work.  In 1984 she discovered, The Association for Craft Producers (ACP), which would pay her directly for her work and help her set up a savings account.  Now more than 34 years later her daughter and 2 sons have college educations and Laxmi has organized 60 other traditional women weavers in her village to understand fair trade and receive their earnings directly as well! Her work & leadership have transformed their lives and their culture!

ACP taught Laxmi how to calculate the value of her work and how to save.  Now after earning fair wages and getting consistent orders,  the men in her village value the women’s work and their economic contribution to their community.  The women’s management of their income has changed the power dynamic in these women’s lives and allowed their voices to be heard, giving them more decision-making power in their families and in their community.

The income earned by the women weavers in Laxmi’s village is now so significant that the men work together with the women to help with the weaving production. Laxmi, as director, has become her husband’s boss, which is something that would have been unheard of 34 years ago!

ACP pays wages directly to the women artisans so that they control their money. In partnering with ACP these women also receive the benefits of social programs set up specifically for the producers. They have access to peer counseling, a scholarship fund to help them keep their children in school, access to workshops on topics such as how to vote, menstrual hygiene and how to exercise their rights as women and citizens and much more.  This is a long way from the world Laxmi grew up in.

Traditional weaving is a labor intensive process but one which can be done in the home. This is vital to the women of Laxmi’s group. To work in their homes means they can look after their children and the farming.  It takes 2 people 16 hours to create 200 meters of warp.  The warp once completed is taken to a weaver’s home and placed on a floor loom that has been passed down to the weaver through generations.  It will take one hour for a weaver to complete 1 meter of cloth, 200 hours to weave the entire warp. This one warp will make about 500 of Ganesh Himal’s dishtowels or about 200 sets of napkins. These are  beautiful and durable products that will last for years. Machine weaving slowly encroaches on these women’s work but Ganesh Himal, ACP and these weavers are determined to keep this home based craft alive.

Women like Laxmi are improving their lives and educating their children, as they have always dreamed of being able to do.  They have been given and they have taken the chance to control the money earned from the fabrics they make.  They have been educated about the value of their work, learned about business and have been treated fairly.

As more people become aware of the value of fair trade, more women will have the opportunity to change their lives and improve the lives of their children and their communities. Laxmi is retired now but her daughter, Sudha, with a masters in social work and trained as a traditional weaver herself, has taken leadership of the group.

We love your commitment to empowering others. What advice would you give to women and girls who are interested in getting involved in causes they are passionate about?

My advice is to look at the story of Laxmi above and understand that these women who have been marginalized are incredibly powerful and when given the opportunity can achieve great things. You have to be patient and allow them to work their magic according to their own culture and traditions. You have to stand beside them as an equal, not as a superior and you have to understand that real, lasting change takes time. You have to really understand that it is not your say, but theirs, that matters for their future. As Westerners we want to fix things and do it quickly but in reality as a person who is interested in empowering others you have to realize that it is about facilitating the change they understand needs to occur. I see our role as helping people cultivate the ground and plant the seeds that will sprout in their climate and conditions and which will ultimately make us good friends and partners for a very long time

What woman artisan or woman in your life has had the biggest impact on you personally?

Again, there are so many! I would say Laxmi has had a huge impact but someone else I have not yet mentioned is my dear friend Pema-la Lama. Pema-la fled Tibet at the age of 12 with little schooling and no money. A refugee in Nepal, she taught herself to read and write in Nepali and learned how to knit and sew, all the while caring for 6 younger siblings and tending to a father dying of cancer. In 1984 she lived with her husband Namgyal , also a Tibetan refugee, who fled when he was one, and their baby daughter, Chimi in a small room in Kathmandu with no water, bathroom or kitchen. They supported themselves with sales from a small shop where they sold bags and knitwear that they made.

As we came to know Pema-la and Namgyal we quickly learned that as Tibetan refugees they had little help from the Nepalese government and that to survive they needed to make their own way. They wanted to partner with us to create a business that would support them, their young family and their dreams. They recognized the need to educate their children and give them skills. They wanted their educated children to become ambassadors to the world and expose the brutal takeover of their country by the Chinese. As Tibetan Buddhists they wanted to pursue their path with compassion and respect for others. Ric and I wondered, as we heard their stories, how we could work together to help make their dreams reality. They were one of the inspirations for us beginning our own venture into Fair Trade and creating Ganesh Himal Trading.

Since 1984 we have worked together with Pema-la and Namgyal as families, friends and business associates to develop businesses that work to benefit all involved. Pema-la has worked harder than almost anyone we know to create this reality. From their humble beginnings, she and her husband have built a strong fair trade business that has helped send their three daughters to good schools and improve the lives of many others. They have set an example of how a successful business can be run with compassion at its core.

In February of 2007, more than 20 years after our first meeting, Pema-la and I sat and reflected on what they have done. Here is more of their story.

As their business grew Pema-la needed to bring other tailors and knitters in to help. She worked side by side with people who had been dispossessed to help create meaningful and profitable work for them. Men like Durba Pariyar who was no longer able to support his family through his small sewing shop. Pema-la asked him to become her master tailor and taught him cutting and patterning. When he wanted to provide work to young men in his village she brought those young men to Kathmandu and taught them to sew. When they had all worked together as a good team she set up a profit sharing plan for all of them so that as the business grew they would all benefit. This profit sharing plan gave them all a voice in the decision making process and a percentage of the profits. It was the first example of its kind in the Kathmandu Valley. When the Maoists came into Kathmandu during the early 2000’s demanding that workshops be closed because owners were not present, Pema-la’s group told them they couldn’t close their workshop because they were all owners. Their workshop was one of the few that was allowed to remain open.

Pema-la and Namgyal did not stop there. As the Nepalese countryside was ripped apart with civil war they reached out to village women who had been widowed in the conflict.   As women fled to the cities to escape the fighting, some were given shelter by a friend of Pema-la’s in Nepalgunj. There they had shelter and food but no work. Pema-la heard of their plight and brought 10 of these women to Kathmandu and put them up in a hotel and gave them a month-long intensive training course in knitting. These women then returned to the shelter and taught others to knit. They are now making many of the knit socks, hats and other knit accessories which Pema-la provides to us at Ganesh Himal Trading.

Early in our business together Namgyal-la taught himself the intricacies of cargo freight forwarding so that we could all avoid the graft and corruption of existing shipping agencies. Over the 30+ years we’ve worked together this cargo company has become one of the best and most respected freight companies in Nepal. He was so well respected for his work and dedication that he was elected as the head of Nepal’s Freight Forwarding Association and as such brought forward the need to treat all workers within the cargo arena with care and respect. As head of the Freight forwarders association he even locked high government officials out of their offices when these officials denied the cargo porters needed work just because the officials wanted the day off. His work with government officials to promote trade and graft free shipping won him the “Civil Voice for Peace and Development “ Award in 2006. He was thrilled to have been handed this by the Prime Minister himself.

Pema-la and Namgyal’s three daughters are grown now. They all finished college in the US and their daughters have been the pride of their lives. Tragically, Pema-la’s husband and our dear friend Namgyal died suddenly of an aggressive liver cancer in 2007 leaving us all with a great sense of loss. It would be to his great pride to know that his middle daughter, Kesang, an accomplished and well educated young woman returned to Nepal to take over her father’s role in running the freight cargo business he had built from scratch. Kesang and her elder sister Chimme also created their own fair trade business, Padhma Creations, working with the abused and trafficked women their mother had trained to knit in Nepalgunj. Namgyal and Pemala had taken Kesang to the shelter in Nepalgunj when she was younger and it had a profound impact on her. “I remember being shocked at the sight of a 13-year-old village girl being rescued from trafficking by the police,” Kesang once said. “The story was that a distant relative of hers had intentions of selling her to a brothel in Mumbai. This incident created a lasting and profound impression on my life.”

Kesang and Chimme are now the second generation of a family committed to fair trade practices. They are both strong believers in helping others and Ganesh Himal has partnered with them since the inception of their business to bring their products into the North American market. It is remarkable to partner with these young, strong and compassionate young Tibetan women.

Ganesh Himal now works closely with Kesang and her company Padhma Creations. Our goal together is to provide Nepali women who have been trafficked or abused, economic development skills so that they can gain economic self-sufficiency. Understanding that it takes more than just a fair wage to bring women out of severe crisis together we have sought to provide women with health, education and social welfare programs. Since 2012 Ganesh Himal has contributed $1.00 for every item purchased from Padhma Creations to a Worker Development Fund. This money is set aside to provide a social benefit package that will give the infrastructural support lacking to women in Nepal and to compliment the already existing fair wage. The women have used a portion of this fund to provide scholarships for education, medical expenses, funeral costs, family emergencies and retirement. Originally, the educational scholarships were prioritized for the women most in need, but as the fund grew the number of recipients grew and now, all of the children of Padhma knitters are on scholarship (49 children as of 2015).  Microloans are also available and each month a knitter can borrow up to $200 at 1% interest. From 2013 to 2016 Ganesh contributed -$21,532 to Padhma’s social welfare fund and is proud to have given them the financial stability in the fund to create lasting change in the lives of these knitters and their families.

Pema-la continues to work with her group of knitters and manages 15 tailors in Kathmandu. Each employee is paid on a per piece basis and she pays 50% higher than regular tailor’s wages.  Free lodging and electricity is available for the producers near the workshop if needed.  They receive a one hour break for lunch, afternoon tea with snack are provided daily, and they can work for paid overtime if they choose.  They are given a one month extra salary for a holiday bonus and are paid medical leave. Many of the tailors have worked with Pema-la for over 15 years.

As Pemala nears her own retirement she has realized that she needs to begin to think of the retirement of those, particularly the women, she has worked with for so long. I got an email from Pemala stating “I am writing to ask you a request on behalf of my knitters.  Many of the knitters have been working with Ganesh Himal for the past 25+ years, they are my extended family. Last month, one of our old knitters was having a personal family issue where her husband was cheating on her and I felt very bad and tried to console her. It is a very complex family matter but I would like to help her with a retirement savings fund. As I am nearing retirement, I have been thinking of setting up a small retirement fund for all my knitters who have worked with me for many years.

This is a small request on behalf of my knitters. If it is possible, for each item they knit could you add 70 cents so I can set up this fund just like Kesang has set up the education, festival and emergency fund for her knitters. All this money will go directly towards helping the women and by helping the women, we realize that we are supporting her entire family.”

You can tell the type of woman that Pema-la is from this email. She has always done her work from a perspective of offering help to others, especially those less fortunate. We at Ganesh Himal have been thrilled to help develop this retirement program alongside Pema-la. It is reflective of the strong and trusting relationship that we have that she can send a request such as this to her trading partner. Throughout 34+ years of relationship, we have created a close bond between our two companies and are able to have honest and direct communications about our needs. This is the value of fair trade and the long term relationships it requires.

I can tell you so much more around the work that Pemala, Kesang and Ganesh Himal Trading were able to do around earthquake relief for the artisans but that would require more time than I know that you have!

So, in reflecting over these years together and our shared path of fair trade it’s amazing to see the work that has been done and the lives that have been affected just in this one family. Pema-la and Namgyal’s dreams of compassionate work, educating their daughters and creating sustainable, lasting partnerships that benefit those with the least advantage have all been realized and continue to grow stronger and provide more benefit despite a 10 year civil war. Tibet is not yet free but Pema-la and her children continue to remain proud of their heritage and promote its enhancement, in their adopted home and throughout the world. These amazing people have helped to create big change in the lives of many less advantaged people, including their own. It has been a great gift for us at Ganesh Himal Trading to work with them these many years.

    Black History Month…Revisited

(Just don’t pack it away in a box for next year)

    By Tekia Thompson

The Storyteller Statue. Mercy, Isn’t she beautiful?  I know that we are several days in to #blackhistorymonth and I haven’t been blowing up my social media pages with all the facts and “did you knows” about black people. I know it seems like this is my time to shine right! But I always feel like this is the time where those who care try to cram it all in…all the joys and triumphs of black people. I mean, we only have 28 days, right? Only 28 days to highlight the best of us. Only 28 days to remind the world that we do in fact matter. So, we better make it count, right?!.

To be honest, I’m used to so many of our stories being pushed aside, dismissed or straight up erased for centuries. Heck, as a black woman and I am still learning about so much. I’m digging deeper, peeling back layers and opening up old wounds. You know they didn’t teach us ALL the things in school! True story, I grew up in the south and remember one teacher stating, “listen we’re not gonna dive into that whole slavery thing ok so don’t get upset.”  Yeah, let that sink in.

It’s tough but worth it. WE are worth it. Give us the mic, create a space, share the platform and let us shine! I recently saw a message posted by American Poet, Amanda Gorman. She mentioned that “…especially for girls of color, we’re treated as lightning or gold in the pan—we’re not treated as things that are going to last.” I am not here to be someone’s one and done, a single burst of light that only comes once. And I think I can say the same for all black people. We are makers, dreamers, doers, contributors, inventors, and so much more!  No doubt many of the things you enjoy and use in your daily life, started in the minds of beautiful black people (i.e. your home security system). Check out Maria Van Brittan.

The Storyteller Statue reminds me that there is so much more to us. So many beautiful, rich stories to be shared about the creativity, passion, BEAUTY, intelligence, soul and power of black people, especially black women. Our story spans more than 28 days worth that’s for sure.

So let’s take our time and spread it out. Learn and share the stories throughout the year. 365 days. Year after year. Because our stories are woven into all parts of life. We were here before. We are here now. And we’ll be here in the future.

In the early 2000’s I unintentionally swam the China Rapids of the Salmon River in Idaho. When I tell that to the people who know the River they gasp and say “Whoa, and you survived”? China Rapids is a difficult series of rapids that has a sequence of whirlpool holes that you want to avoid, I went into every one. It was, to say the least, terrifying but also illuminating.

I remember the first hole the best, in slow motion being sucked downward into a whirlpool where everything was utter chaos and raw power. I struggled to try to get out but the River was so powerful and in control there was nothing I could do. I remember being sucked deeper down into the river and then when I could no longer hold my breath, I let

go. I remember clearly an acceptance that I might not make it out and then I relaxed. As soon as I found that stillness, the river let me go and up I went to the surface taking a huge gulp of beautiful air. Then I went right back down into the next whirlpool whirling into the depths. That happened 4 times, if I remember right, with only a gulp of air in between each raging, whirling pool of water. But the River and I somehow made a partnership, and as I relaxed and accepted that I had no control, I was released again and again until finally I surfaced below the rapids, in the calm, my boatmates waiting with the radio in case I needed a helicopter rescue.

Why do I tell you this story now? Because for the last 4 years I feel like I have been swimming the China rapids, coming up for brief bits of air and then beingdrug down into a whirlpool of unimaginable chaos over and over again, feeling so out of control as if there was no way out. Then I remember the lesson of China rapids. Relax, be still, don’t struggle, form a partnership with the chaos in a way that allows you to move forward into the next new place. Soon there will be calm.

These years have not been easy, especially the last 10 months as we have roiled in the chaos of racism, politics and pandemic, but in that chaos I have found stillness and beauty and a deepened partnership with those who doggedly seek a world that works for all beings. Would I want to replay this time, no, just as I would not chose to swim those rapids again, but I am grateful for what I have learned, the alliances formed, the visions of the future expressed and the community that has evolved.

Thank you for all you have done to support Ganesh Himal Trading this year and for the last 36! May 2021 see a bit of the calm below the rapids and give us gratitude for the immense lessons learned and a clearer vision and greater determination for the path forward. We are so grateful to you all.

    Namaste and Happy Holidays!

Ganesh Himal had the chance to interview Tekia Thompson who is the assistant manager at Ten Thousand Villages in Overland Park, Kansas. She is also the host of the new talk show serving the fair trade community,  AmplifyLIVE!  Recently, she started a blog on Instagram, Black & Fair.

GHT: Tell us all about Black & Fair and why you feel this is a topic that needs to be explored.. blog… ( what are you calling this?)

TT: Wow where to begin. Black & Fair (an Instagram blog) was born out of the internal struggle I’ve had with myself and this question of “Where do I, a black woman who wants to support and live out the mission of fair trade fit in?” I rarely saw myself as the consumer or leader. Rather, I should say someone who represents me, a woman of color. Every trendy hip photo, blogpost, webinar, YouTube show etc. showed a certain look. I’ll be honest, a very white look.  Black & Fair is about learning, challenging, and changing the narrative of how people of color are viewed in the world of fair trade. I AM NOT an expert and I don’t speak for all people of color, but I firmly believe that the conversation should be happening and if there wasn’t a platform to do it on, so I created one myself.

GHT: How did you get involved in fair trade?

TT: I think I’ve always been involved in some aspect of fair trade before I even know what fair trade really was. I have spent a good majority of my life in the mission field locally and abroad and always found it disheartening when others worked alongside me believing the communities in which we served needed saving or couldn’t thrive without us there. I wanted to be different and always approached it as a place of doing life together and creating a space for others to be seen. At its core, fair trade is about putting people and planet first, so I think it has always been with me. I became more involved on the “corporate” side of things when I started working as the Assistant Manager at Ten Thousand Villages in Overland Park KS.

GHT: How do you hope Black & Fair influences the discussion around racism within the Fair Trade Community?

TT: My hope is to plant the seed within the fair trade community that we, people of color are a vital, active contributing part of this community! All communities in fact.  Not just as marginalized artisans but as makers, doers, dreamers and yes, leaders! I am hoping for an open, honest discussion. I know I’m walking a fine line in the content I’ve been sharing and how for some this may be great but for others I’m poking the bear. But hey we all know winter is coming and I don’t want that beast going back into hibernation. We need to be talking and actively working together to seek actual change.

GHT: You have been leading small group discussions on racism.  What inspired you to do the small group settings? How have they been going?

TT: Yes, my best friend who is also black started an initiative called Colorful Conversations. The focus of Colorful Conversations was to create a grace-filled space in which our white friends and family have the opportunity to openly share their thoughts, concerns, ideas and perspectives on racism and its very real impact as well as listen to our unique perspectives and experiences as black women in America. We have been leading these discussions with a spirit of grace and humility; meeting people where they are in order to build a bridge toward cultural and personal change. At first we didn’t want to even think about it but after having several talks with various friends and feeling this tug on our hearts we thought, we can do this. We have held 12 small group sessions so far and each one has been raw, real, eye opening and life changing.  Having the small groups allowed for people to feel more comfortable sharing and asking the tough questions. We have been bold in sharing our stories as well and in some ways it’s been an emotional rollercoaster and in other ways it’s been very freeing! We have been asked to create a community -wide event so that’s next on our very full plates.

GHT: You are very busy with several projects, what do you do for fun? Or to unwind?

TT: SLEEP! Ha. I have been listening to a lot of music. Everything from classical to country to KPOP (yes I love Korean dramas and music)! It has helped me take a step back and regroup. I do know that I will have to slow down soon and delegate one of my many projects, so we’ll see what that will look like in the upcoming months.

CCF Helps Artisan Group (ACP) Survive COVID

Recently I was contacted by my dear friend, Meera Bhatterai, director of the Association for Craft Producers (ACP), regarding a truly perilous situation for over 1000 women artisans in Nepal. Since their founding in 1984 ACP has helped 1000’s of low-income women in Nepal gain access to income, skills development, social benefits and training.  They are a founding member of the Fair Trade Group Nepal and a long-time member of the World Fair Trade Organization. They are a Fair Trade success story and Ganesh Himal Trading is proud to have been selling their products since 1986.
Now, however, with the lockdown due to Covid-19 and the subsequent loss of sales, ACP’s situation is dire and they have reached out for help. There is no PPP loan in Nepal nor are there government resources for those who have lost their employment. ACP’s monthly expenses for salaries and benefits alone, comes to $33,000/month so you can see that they will need a lot to cover the producers wages in the coming months. With sales at 40% less than previous years and orders to make they need capital to survive while they learn how to adapt.
In early July, Ganesh Himal Trading’s partner foundation Conscious Connections Foundation (CCF) was thrilled to be able to provide a $25,000 grant for ACP’s operating expenses but they need much more than that and so we are looking to raise at least $25,000 more on their behalf.  CCF is a non-profit, all volunteer run organization and all donations are tax deductible. Our bank fees are covered by a generous donor so that 100% of your donation will go directly to assist them. ACP is an amazing group, with a long history of bringing income and resources directly to women, they cannot fail and we hope you can help in any amount possible. Ric and Denise are personally going to match the first $2500 of donations made to assist ACP.
As Meera so aptly states in her letter:
“ACP has been self-reliant since our establishment in 1984, as a Not-for-Profit social enterprise, ACP had become self-sufficient from the 4th year…it has been 30 years since ACP has relied on its own income source for day-to-day operations.  In 2015 after the devastating earthquake, we had a very fragile financial situation and we sought donor support to meet our operational expenses. We once again face a difficult situation. We are in dire need of working capital to tide over the present grave crisis imposed upon us by the pandemic.  Sadly nothing significant has been announced by the government which would benefit MSMEs and SMEs like us.  We are trying to locate funding support for our operational cost for the next 6 months, amounting to NRs. 30,000,000 (USD 260,000).
You have always believed in our work and supported us in time of crisis. We once again seek your support…We thank you for your continued support and looking forward to your response.
    Take care and stay safe.
    Warm regards
    Meera”

Ganesh Himal Trading believes that if we want the world of trade to change we can’t do it alone and that we are stronger together. So in the spirit of creating a movement for economic justice that will build far into the future we want to spotlight some of our fair trade partners who are doing great work right along side of us. We hope this series will give you hope and help you see what an amazing fair trade community exists and how we can build it even stronger together.

From Denise Attwood, Co-Owner of Ganesh Himal Trading

In June I was fortunate to serendipitously run across a blogpost Change Starts with Us by fellow Fair Trader, Rosa Chang, of Blossom Inspirations . Rosa’s blogpost and her honesty touched me deeply and I realized how important it was to bring her courageous writing to a larger audience. So I emailed her and told her how much I appreciated what she had said and that I had shared her blog on the Conscious Consumer Network.

Rosa immediately responded with the kindest email giving me all kinds of information and encouraging words. She is about the warmest individual I have never met (but I hope to)!  After that we talked on the phone and from that  conversation decided it would be fun to collaborate and cross pollinate our two businesses! So here we go! Rosa has inspired us and we hope to inspire you to look deeply into the reasons why these two businesses do the work we do and to realize how wonderfully our products compliment each other. With that, we are proud to introduce our fellow Fair Trade peer Rosa Chang and Blossom Inspirations! Please read her interview below:

With their floral candleholders gourds, Blossom Inspirations are not only supporting artisans from Perú and young moms in Chicago with Bright Endeavors. Now they are also working synergistically with Ganesh Himal by adding table placemats to support artisans in Nepal, which is good for the planet, and good for you. Cheers to the Power of the Community!

What inspired you to start your business? How did you choose Peru and Mexico to import from? What kind of work did you do before you went into fair trade?

In 2008, during the financial crisis, my husband Jeffrey Hansen and myself Chang Claro were impacted with the downsizing of GE financial division.

This uncomfortable moment and my homesick (I left my native country Peru when I was 25 years old to study my master in Mexico) became an opportunity to meet again with my friend and partner Jorge Cam Rosell and altogether find ways to continue being in touch with Peru, to contribute and to preserve Peruvian and Mexican art passed over generations.

I will always be grateful for what Mexico and Peru have given me: education, values, family, friends, culture, food, art, etc and this is my way to pay forward.

You recently came out with a new book, can you tell us more about the impetus for writing the book and what it’s about?

I started to write this bilingual book ”Cuva Wants to Kow the World”  over a year ago. It is inspired in many magical nights, where my husband and I recreated and read bedtime story for our girls in Spanish and English to expose them to different language and identify them with their roots.

The book talks about diversity, inclusion, empowering women to follow their dreams and come with an Alpaca toy (Cuyita, the  guinea pig) handmade by the artisan. Based also on my tech background, I used technology as a driver for social inclusion and to connect the reader with the artisan too (it contains a QR Code to find step by step how Cuyita has been made)

However, I never imagine that this book will arrive during this pandemic and social crisis and that it would become my response to COVID to support artisans on their basic needs and bring them work.

In a recent blogpost, you talked about racism & fair trade. Can you talk about how the Fair Trade movement is connected to issues of racism, and why it’s important to address this issue within our community?

I think that Fair Trade could be an ally not only to reduce poverty, inequality but also to reduce racism, because as owners of small fair trade business, we constantly are educating people to accept other cultures, arts and traditions, promoting diversity and inclusion. And in addition, we have a very important mission, to communicate people where their money go when they buy a fair trade product, who made their products? How are they benefiting? And more important now, living in this crisis where your money can make the different to support vulnerable people or multi-millionaire. Are you reducing or increasing the equality gap, racism?
