At the heart of Ganesh Himal Trading is environmental stewardship. The Fair Trade Federation (FTF) describes Environmental Stewardship as offering “current generations the ability to meet their needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Cultivating Environmental Stewardship is one of the nine principles FTF members commit to, but we at Ganesh Himal Trading (GHT) took this environmental commitment further.  

“Today less than 30% of Nepal’s forests remain and the consequences of this environmental degradation are devastating for local populations.”

With the planet always at the forefront of our business decisions, GHT began partnering with Eden Reforestation in 2019 to offset the CO2 emissions created with air freighting goods halfway around the world. This means that for the last five years, Ganesh Himal Trading has paid Eden Reforestation to plant and care for trees in Nepal. Additionally, we committed to planting 1,000 trees to offset the CO2 emissions from shipments prior to 2019. Since beginning our relationship with Eden Reforestation, Ganesh Himal Trading has sponsored the planting of over 20,000 trees.

We choose to partner with Eden Reforestation because in addition to reestablishing Nepal’s forests, they pay local Nepalis a fair wage to care for the seedlings. To date, Eden Reforestation has grown their operations in Nepal to 21 project sites that encompass over 6,625 hectares of land and over 190 individuals. Everything about Eden Reforestation’s efforts thrills us, which was why we were extra excited to hear that they’re moving beyond tree planting to Landscape Restoration!

According to Eden Reforestation, “tree planting has quickly become the global standard for individuals and businesses to help combat climate change, and these efforts have had an undeniably positive impact upon communities and global ecosystems. However, while this remains a vital part of Eden’s Landscape Restoration strategy, tree planting alone does not reduce long-term poverty or adequately address the acute effects of climate change.”
