    Hello, Conscious Connections family! We’re thrilled to reconnect with you and share some transformative news that has been brewing behind the scenes. After a quiet few months of dedicated work, we’re excited to announce our new partnership that will expand our impact in Nepal.

    A Partnership Rooted in Shared Vision

    In mid-December, Conscious Connections Foundation (CCF) took an important step forward by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Conscious Connections Nepal (CCN), our new partner organization in Nepal. This collaboration isn’t just a formality—it’s a vibrant commitment to deepening our work on the ground. By joining forces, CCN now becomes an independent, registered non-profit in Nepal with the ability to receive funds directly from abroad, which means we can support community projects more efficiently and effectively.

    At Conscious Connections Foundation, our mission is to invest in the power of women and girls to be key participants in their society. Partnering with CCN amplifies this mission, allowing us to work more directly with local partners and reduce administrative hurdles. In turn, CCN gains the flexibility to seek additional funding, ensuring that their programming can expand and evolve with the needs of Nepal’s diverse communities. Over the years, CCF has been dedicated to training women leaders, and we are thrilled to see several of them now stepping into influential roles at CCN—turning their skills into action and shaping a brighter future.

    What CCN Brings to the Table

    Strengthening Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR):
    CCN is set to continue and deepen the critical work of CCF on SRHR, including:

    • menstrual health education

    • training women to make reusable menstrual pads;

    • distributing pre-made reusable menstrual hygiene kits;

    • supporting women by exposing myths about menstruation; and

    • continuing to engage and support members of the LBGTQI+ community and other marginalized groups across Nepal.

    Boosting Livelihoods & Entrepreneurship:
    In addition to health initiatives, CCN will further its work in livelihood and entrepreneurship. By supporting women and girls in skills development that provide reliable income, they’re not only fostering creative enterprise but also building pathways for economic independence.

    Championing Education:
    Education remains a cornerstone of sustainable development. CCN will continue to support education through scholarships and other initiatives, opening doors for Nepal’s women, girls, and marginalized individuals to a brighter future.

    Addressing Climate Change:
    In a world where climate change is reshaping lives around the world, CCN is also boldly stepping into a new arena. They will focus on helping rural communities adapt to environmental changes, with special attention to the links between climate change, women, SRHR, and economic empowerment.

    While these initiatives might seem ambitious, the CCN team is embracing a step-by-step approach—ensuring that every project is both impactful and sustainable and learning is captured along the way.

    What’s on the Horizon?

    As we look ahead in 2025, CCF and CCN have been hard at work outlining a clear vision for the upcoming year. In a detailed review at the end of 2024, we finalized the budget that will guide CCN’s projects over the next 1 to 1.5 years. 2025 will be our most ambitious year yet! Stay tuned for updates as we share more about specific projects in the coming months. It’s also important to note that while we have set long-term plans, CCN will retain the flexibility to provide emergency funding or adjust programming as new challenges emerge.

    Moving Forward Together

    CCF’s partnership with CCN is more than an administrative milestone—it’s a testament to our shared belief in empowering local communities and fostering sustainable change. We are also so excited to provide a leadership training platform for the incredible women now leading CCN – putting the women of Nepal front and center in shaping the future of the organization and their work in the country.

    Recently I have been thinking a lot about earthquakes & interstitial fluids…

    Why earthquakes? Because when Nepal experienced their 7.9 magnitude earthquake and 400+ major aftershocks there was massive destruction & death, no certainty, no stability, no understanding of what the future might bring. Only a present of chaos and fear. What did exist, though, was a palpable energy of people of all walks of life coming together to help and calm each other, to feed and house each other and to find a common pathway forward. There was a knowing that each person played a part and that everyone’s efforts, no matter how small, were needed. The lessons of earthquakes apply to our time.

    Why interstitial fluids? Because I recently learned that this is the largest organ system in our bodies, a system that is 4 times larger than our cardiovascular system and one which coordinates, connects and communicates with all of our other organs constantly bringing balance, harmony and health to our entire system. This life serving organ, so vital to keeping us alive, was just discovered recently but is still unknown to many. Not unlike where we find ourselves at this moment. As Otto Scharmer recently stated “There is no shortage of good intention on this planet right now…we  potentially are the biggest movement this planet has ever seen, but it is a planetary movement that is not aware of itself”.  He emphasizes that we have to become aware of each other so that we can become an historical force to confront the unprecedented challenges we face. We must, if you will, come to know ourselves as the interstitial fluid, the most vital system, bringing balance, harmony and health back to our entire system. 

    We are in the midst of huge uncertainty and have no idea what the future will hold but we are part of a movement that has been modeling and working on creating a future of mutual benefit for all beings for a long time…and there are many of us. Now is the time for us to come together, to recognize each other, to support and care for one another so that we can make our huge collective visions of mutually beneficial systems of care and balance, a reality.

    THE STORY OF NILAM

     

    Nilam Poudel has organized for transgender rights for much of her life. From humble beginnings she has become a leading voice in the fight for trans rights across Nepal, especially when it comes to providing safe and sustainable employment for trans individuals.

    Her path to this role began in the early 2000s. While working as a child maid in Thailand to support her family of eight siblings in Nepal, Nilam took a chance: she enrolled in an extended makeup training course offered in Bangkok. Using the skills she developed, Nilam decided to start her own business—and with the income it provided her, she left her work to return to Nepal. As her business grew, she had the chance to work on several Hollywood movies (such as Black Narcissists to Our Girls) and fashion shows across the country. In her success, she recognized an opportunity for the hundreds of other trans men and women she knew in Kathmandu who were subject to the severe abuse and ostracization that she had grown up with.

    As in the United States, trans communities in Nepal are some of the most discriminated and marginalized groups. In 2007, Nepal’s Supreme Court made a groundbreaking decision on gender identity and sexual orientation that recognized equal rights for sexual minorities. The decision ordered the government to issue citizenship certificates and identity cards with a third gender option in the form of ‘other’. In 2015, Nepal joined a handful of countries around the world by adding protections for the LGBTQIA community in its constitution.

    Despite these progressive laws, however, discrimination and prejudice continued. Today, transgender individuals in Nepal continue to be excluded and rejected by their families, leaving them with few options to support themselves financially. Though sex work is illegal across Nepal, many trans women are forced to engage in it as the only means to provide for themselves.

    BUILDING CONSCIOUS CONNECTIONS

    CCF first met Nilam during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 when she was trying to assist with many in the LGBTQIA community who had lost their jobs due to the lockdown. CCF Board member, Kesang Yudron, worked with Nilam to identify & distribute food rations to over 100 individuals throughout the Terai and Kathmandu. Because of the great work Nilam did in 2020, CCF worked with her again in 2021 when Covid hit Nepal the hardest. Distributing food, cooking gas and masks to another 95 individuals

    As the pressures of the pandemic receded, Nilam and Kesang began examining more long term ways of addressing the adversity faced by the LGBTQIA community. Nilam had long dreamed of providing other trans women with skill training programs like the makeup training she had received so participants could have the opportunity to leave sex work. In June of 2022, CCF partnered with Nilam once again to make this dream a reality.

    “THE FIRST TRAININGS OF THEIR KIND”

    With funding by CCF and on the ground support through Kesang, Nilam worked to organize two, 11-day certification courses for participants to learn about makeup and beautician practice. The first trainings of their kind in Nepal, they brought together 62 LGBTQIA participants from Itahari, Dharan, Biratnagar, Rajbiraj and Damak. Many of transgender participants were HIV positive and came from a background of sex work while others, like Nilam, were long-time activists and organizers for Trans rights in Nepal. One such participant, Sunil, is a central point of contact for the LGBTQIA community on social media, helping people get access to medicine and psychological help.

    Not only did these trainings provide an opportunity to learn a new skill, but they allowed participants to build confidence and build new relationships within their LGBTQIA community.

    Included in these trainings was a day-long portion on how participants could start their own business and also a final certification of completion could be used to show to salons and potential clients.

    Three months later, Nilam’s hard work has paid off:

    Three women are now in the process of opening their own beauty parlors in Southern Nepal. Nilam has been working with them to provide additional business support on how to open a beauty business. In a first for CCF, we have received several TikTok and Instagram photos with them showing their work in social media.

    Others have found jobs in local salons or are doing freelance bridal makeup work. They are now making Rs. 10,000-12,000 per day—an amount equivalent to what it would take them a full month to make before.

    For Gita Katiwall, a 26 years old queer woman from the Terai, the makeup training meant giving her a confidence to walk outside with makeup which she had never done before. She is also currently applying for jobs at makeup studios.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    The relationship between makeup and transgender individuals in Nepal is a complex one. For many trans women, makeup is the first step to embracing their own gender identity. In the Terai, Transgender people face a high rate of homicide and face a possibility of violence every day.  Many trans participants said that wearing makeup means not getting verbally and physically abused on the street. Being more accepted by society when they fit into the female form. For transgender men, make up was helpful in appearing in a more male form.

    CCF exists to invest in the power of women and girls to be key participants in their society. This cannot happen if we allow LGBTQIA communities to be ignored or left in the margins. Nilam’s work and that of the other 62 participants in these trainings will go on to have ripple effects far into the future. All of us look forward to being there to witness what that will look like.

    Bragging Rights!

    24 years ago our son, Cameron Norbu Attwood Conner, was born as a bright and shining star into this world. He’s traveled many times back and forth to Nepal with us, happily been squished in with Nepali products in the car and even spent the better part of a year doing earthquake relief in Nepal after graduating from high-school. We have been co-conspirators in creating our non-profit the Conscious Connections Foundation and he’s now working as a community organizer in Dallas, TX while he waits for Covid to abate so he can do his year long Watson Fellowship outside the US studying “The Commons”. For all of that enthusiasm and work we couldn’t be more proud.  BUT, my bragging rights this time are about something different!

    This January a new  book called “The Commoner’s Catalog for Changemaking” was published and Cameron’s research and writing were a big part of this.  As author, David Bollier, comments in his acknowledgements “The Commoner’s Catalog for Changemaking could not have gotten far without the fierce commitment and careful research and writing of Cameron Conner, a recently coined Watson Fellow whose research plans were abruptly suspended by the pandemic.” It is for this that I claim bragging rights! I know how much effort he poured into this and to see it in print is fantastic.

    So what does this catalog have to do with Fair Trade? I would say everything and I think each of you should carry this book in your store! This book’s goal is to help us connect with each other and “learn how we can prioritize people’s needs over market extraction, steward the earth, relocalize the economy and build new institutions of empowerment” . It “points the way towards an economics of sufficiency, a politics of fairness, and a culture of belonging”. That is what Fair Trade is about.

    So, make a mom proud and check out this book and read Cameron’s article below! You will be inspired, delighted, informed and transformed. Realizing we are part of a larger movement of change is empowering and seeing others who are doing it in areas outside of fair trade just shows us how building a new world of connection, belonging and fairness is growing and change is happening. Glad we are on this path together!

    Sometimes it’s Just Destiny

    Sometimes things are just meant to be. It’s more than coincidence, it’s more like destiny. That’s what happened in Sertung, Nepal in 2015. We were doing earthquake assessment in an area to the west of Langtang on a 12-day trek that few had traveled since before the Maoist revolution 20 years earlier. We trekked directly east of the epicenter of the enormous earthquake of April 25, 2015, wanting  to understand what relief had come to these remote villages.

    As usual, our beloved friend and guide Ram Karki, with who we’ve trekked thousands of miles, was our fearless leader along with his son Pradeep. We set off into this area armed with solar lamps and questions of how Conscious Connections Foundation (CCF) could be of help. Midway through our trek our cook collapsed falling backward into a stream and Pradeep thought he had died. Running to the next village of Sertung, I asked in my simple Nepali, for the local medic. That is where the serendipity happened. I was led by two young girls to the home of Yogendra & Pema Tamang, the Certified Medical Assistant of the Village who helped us revive the cook (who we later found out was suffering from alcohol withdrawal!)

    With a warm bed and some scolding from Pema, the cook survived, and because we had to lay over longer in Sertung than we had planned we interviewed Yogendra about what their needs were after the earthquake. He said they had received a few tarps, but their village was too remote to be the recipient of 

    much aid. We asked him what they needed and he said “good steady income so they could rebuild”. That’s when my Ganesh Himal hat popped on and we began to discuss their handwork skills. Together we began the exploration of potential products they could make and now 6 years later Ganesh Himal has purchased over $56,000 dollars directly from village women who have used it to rebuild and send their children to school. Because of this serendipity, you get to experience Sertungs handwork when you purchase their beautiful recycled sari-wrapped trivets, bowls, coasters, baskets, and trays. All because our cook passed out! Such serendipity.

    CCF has also worked directly with Pema & Yogendra over these years to fund menstrual hygiene & emergency first aid training and distribute reusable menstrual kits to over 500 women and girls in the area. Many of you have helped fund that work!  

    Developing products in such a remote area is tricky & challenging. Items have to be lightweight to transport the two-day walk (for Nepali’s)  to the nearest road. That’s why we work with recycled saris. But also developing products in such a remote area can present tremendous opportunity to work with ancient skills. That is how we developed these new market baskets you see featured today. 

    Nepali’s traditionally carry items in a handwoven basket (doko). Villagers either make their own or purchase them from someone nearby. These doko’s arephenomenally strong & the weaving beautiful,  but they are in danger of being replaced by duffels, large plastic bags, or encroaching roads. Always being one to want to revive ancient skills I recently asked if there was a doko maker in Sertung and if they could think of anything besides bamboo to work with (bamboo is extremely difficult to import from Nepal). Serendipity again as Yogendra’s uncle is a skilled doko maker and agreed to teach the women of Tamang Handicrafts his skill. Yogendra came up with the idea of using strapping tape (about the same width of a bamboo strip and incredibly strong) and voila, these beautiful, long-lasting market baskets were born. The staff of Ganesh Himal Trading each has one and they are a tremendous success!

    So here’s to destiny and to long-lasting relationships. The villagers of Sertung have become a part of our family and we continue to look to their skills and determination for inspiration. We feel it was our destiny to work with them and in Nepal in general and we love those relationships.     CCF is so proud to present the First Place winner of the 20/21 Joy Attwood Scholarship (JA)!

    Not only did Riza receive the JA College Scholarship but she is the first from the Power of 5 program to also win entrance into the highly competitive 12 month Women Lead program in Nepal! This is such an exciting opportunity for her and she will become a great mentor to other girls in the Power of 5 program!

    Here is Riza’s story. Thanks to all of our donors who have funded the Power of 5 as well as the Joy Attwood scholarships. You have been hugely instrumental in all of this!

     

    Riza Gonga Prajapati is currently pursuing A Level from Global College. She is 17 years old. She aims to continue her father’s business and to help in further growing it.

     

    “Due to restrictions and lockdown, currently I have been taking online classes but physical classes would have been more interactive with no problems of internet service. However, our classes are not affected so I feel happy about it. I like mathematics and I plan to do Bachelors in Business Administration with specialization in marketing.”

     

    “The lockdown have few pros despite of all the cons. In current situation we have been seeing various businesses emerge: many of them found online medium fruitful and are making a living out of it. So, in future I am looking forward to expanding this business and delivering in local areas. My brother is doing IT and is less interested in ceramics so I want to take our ancestral skill forward. During this lockdown I learnt to make traditional – oil & cotton wick lamps (diyo) and I want to gradually learn to make varieties of ceramics item in my leisure.”

     

    She wants to tackle poverty of her periphery and to help make a prosperous community. Despite of being educated, unemployment rate is very high. So, she wants to build a platform to provide trainings in making ceramic products and preserve the traditional skills. As a hobby she loves to sing and travel. She expressed her dream to travel Switzerland.

     

    Riza has good grades and wants to contribute and promote the handicraft sector. She says that she will be an asset for the organization due to which she feels she deserves this scholarship.

    3500 Nepali Women are
    in the Know! 

    Sometimes you just have to stop and say WOW! Appreciate that the universe has conspired to bring things together just perfectly and be thankful for all the hard work, trust and support of so many (including many of you) that has gotten us all to this point. 

    What are we celebrating? That over 3500 women and girls in Nepal have gotten access to information, education and supplies that will forever change their lives and the lives of their children and communities. It’s a long story but GHT’s non-profit (Conscious Connections Foundation) and the wonderful team put together by our project manager in Nepal, Kesang Yudron, has, in the last 3 years: 

    • trained unskilled Nepali women to sew quality reusable menstrual pad kits (over 4500 kits have been made since March 2018)
    • put on interactive training programs that provide basic and accessible Menstrual Hygiene training to both urban and rural women, and
    • produced  a comprehensive “Nepalcentric” highly illustrated, simple language, menstrual hygiene manual (written, illustrated and graphically designed by an all Nepali team), 

    In August of 2020, Kesang was approached by the Lhomi women of the remote Makalu region in far eastern Nepal, near the Tibetan border. They knew they wanted menstrual hygiene education and asked CCF and our Nepali team if we would fund and provide in depth training on women’s health and menstruation to 54 women leaders from 18 of their villages. Along with the training they asked if CCF would fund the production of 3000 reusable menstrual hygiene kits to distribute to women and girls in these villages. These kits would be given out by the local leaders when they returned to their villages to do local training. They also wanted instruction on how to hand sew their own cloth pads for future use! CCF and Kesang said YES and even with Covid the planning started! I am amazed to say that the Lhomi project was just completed on April 9!

    The Lhomi project was CCF’s largest project in menstrual hygiene training to date and our amazing program manager, Kesang (also a producer partner of GHT), led the entire project. Kesang and her team of 3 other Nepali women (2 Lhomi-1 a nurse) trekked over 12 days through extremely difficult terrain with 18 donkeys carrying 3000 kits and 300 Nepali menstrual hygiene manuals. They were welcomed warmly and enthusiastically by all.

    Kesang returned on April 9th with stories of women, who for the first time ever, were beginning to understand the wonders of what happens in their bodies, learning that we carry eggs and have hormones and that menstruation is the amazing process that gives us the chance to have children, or not! This information is, for the first time, being explained in a simple but comprehensive manner to women who have never gotten the chance to learn about it and they are so excited to receive it. It may not seem like much to us but it is life changing for them. 

    Kesang will soon do a full report on the program but for now, we celebrate the accomplishment and the communities that got us this far. Many of you have done fundraisers, put out jars for donations and supported “period Paddi”! Look where you have gotten us! We couldn’t have done it without your support.

    Kesang said that her biggest learning from this project was how important it is to get this information to the women in these really remote areas. So, now, after 3 years of much hard work, we have all of the pieces in place: the kits, the training manual and the training experience, and will be able to reach out much more easily to these remote areas where few NGO’s go. 

    This is what I love about Fair Trade…a community that sees how valuable giving women access to skills, information and decision making is, not only for themselves, but for their families, communities and the environment.  Ganesh Himal, CCF and our partners in Nepal know that when women have access to information, economy and the understanding and control of their bodies, they can make informed decisions based on their own unique circumstances and needs.     A friend once told me a story about the illusion of change. She said we all think it takes huge shifts to make big change, but imagine this, what if we changed our current direction by just one degree.

    If we did, and followed that trajectory, we would end up in an entirely different place than if we had stayed on the same path. Just one degree and our end point is very different. That’s a big lesson.

    So here we find ourselves in a place where we have huge tumultuous change. 180 degree change for many. Change that is overwhelming and scary. How do we begin to cope with that? I think the answer lies in making sure we find our one degree of change and we work hard to create that path and stay on it. There are gazillions of changes we can make but to stay sane maybe our one degree is enough for right now. Focusing on that can give us resilience and power and still get us to an entirely different place.

    At Ganesh Himal Trading, our one degree of shift is to focus even more intently on nurturing our community and the amazing relationships of care and kindness that reside there.

    From our producer groups in Nepal, to our staff, to our customers and this amazing planet, our community literally is our focus right now. Our one degree shift is to always know and behave like we belong to an amazing web of relationships, of people and beings that rely on us and upon whom we heavily rely for our well-being.

    So, as you will read below, we’ve spent most of our time this past month creating & providing  trainings for retail store owners through our Fair Trade Retail Support Facebook group. It’s our desire to provide tools to help you survive and thrive through these difficult times. This week we launched our newest creation, the Conscious Consumer Network (CCN).  We hope this network will help customers locate, learn about and purchase from your retail fair trade stores through this Facebook group platform.

    Luckily the producers in Nepal we work with are doing ok through their own intense lockdown.

    Each of them received a big payment right before the pandemic struck, which we are so grateful for.  It is inspiring to see some of them, with funding from our foundation CCF, reach out to those less fortunate to distribute emergency food and needed menstrual supplies.

    Our incredible staff in Spokane are still luckily employed and all at home for the moment. Just this week we received a PPP loan and that gave us a sigh of relief since our sales in April were down 91.5% from 2019! To try to create a little normal, the staff rotates and one of them comes in a couple of times a week to do some bookkeeping or send the occasional order. And luckily Ric and I live just 500 feet from the warehouse so even when they can’t come in we are always open for business!

    We hope you are well and staying safe. We are lucky to have our community and to be able to share hope.

    We hope you can find your one degree of change and follow it vigilantly, if we all do that, with great clarity and kindness, perhaps, just perhaps, we will find the courage to continue on that path far into the future and create a “new normal” that allows all beings to thrive, including our amazing planet.

    International Fair Trade Charter Defines Vision for a Fairer World

    Many people use the term “fair trade,” but what does it actually mean? Today, more than 300 organizations around the world are uniting to launch an International Fair Trade Charterthat harmonizes the fundamental values of fair trade and defines our common vision towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Business as usual will not deliver the step change needed to meet the SDGs, adopted by the world’s nations on September 25, 2015 and whose third anniversary is being marked today in New York and around the world.

    The International Fair Trade Charter, initiated by Fairtrade International and the World Fair Trade Organization, defines new models that build a stronger economy and environment for all. The Charter has been recognized by diverse local, national and international organizations from across the cooperative, social enterprise, organic, farmer, and global solidarity movements.

    Regarding the launch of the Charter, the Fair Trade Federation’s Executive Director Chris Solt stated, “The Fair Trade Federation (FTF), the trade association representing over 200 fair trade enterprises in the U.S. and Canada, enthusiastically joins in solidarity with the larger fair trade movement to support, promote, and endorse an updated and revised International Fair Trade Charter. The new Charter refreshes the vision of fair trade, proposing solutions and a viable alternative to a global economy that is driving inequality, poverty, and ecological crisis. The FTF also endorses a shared vision of a world in which justice, equity, and sustainable development are at the heart of trade structures and practices so that everyone, through their work, can maintain a decent and dignified livelihood.”

    The global fair trade movement urges policy-makers and business leaders, citizens and consumers to embrace the vision of the International Fair Trade Charter to create a global trading system populated by supply chains and models of business that leave no one behind. By supporting fair trade producers and businesses, advocating to transform the rules of global trade, and buying fair trade products, we can all act to make sustainable and fair development a reality and give the world a fighting chance at reaching the goals we set for ourselves.
