Riza Prajapati has been an enthusiastic recipient of the Power of 5 Education Fund stipend since its inception in 2012. She is also merit and need based first place winner of the  Joy Attwood College Scholarship. 

Starting in 2019 each girl who applied for the Joy Attwood Scholarship also is required to apply for the WomenLead 12-month leadership training program. In 2021, Riza became the first of our scholarship recipients to be accepted into this prestigious program. We couldn’t be more proud of her.

Firstly I am so happy to be a 2021 Leader in Women Lead. I want to thank the ACP family for providing me with this great platform!

I took 2 weeks to study at the leadership institute which was really helpful for me to learn many new things. I took sessions on time management, leadership style, public speaking, gender stereotype, learning style, my emotions matters, and civic engagement. The 2-week session brought changes to me which I really can feel it. These sessions were taken virtually and after the leadership institute, we took 6 physical classes. I made many new friends and they are really cooperative, helpful & fun as well.

After the leadership institute, we have to conduct SLP (School Leadership Program). Currently, I and my co-leader are taking SLP classes at Everest English School. Every Saturday we are taking classes of grade 9 students. SLP sessions are very entertaining and we get to experience many new things. I used to feel so awkward to walk or to go somewhere. Now I can go everywhere without constant help from others. I am learning and want to further explore a better version of myself. My public speaking is getting good these days so I am much delighted and I want to thank you all from bottom of my heart.

Employees use their software to find their favorite charities – charities like CCF – and make donations & have their gifts matched by their employer. CCF receives the funds in a bundle monthly with no charges deducted.

If you know how to get onto your company’s Benevity site, search for Conscious Connections Foundation or enter our registered charity number 471602190
in the search bar of your workplace giving program portal (Spark). If you are an existing donor who gives regularly to CCF outside of the Benevity platform please check to see if your employer has a workplace matching program that will maximize your gifts. Your donation of $25 could easily become $50 and that would keep a girl in school for 5 months or help us fund a part of a Menstrual hygiene training. The doubling helps us double our impact.

18 years old Pramila lives in Ravi Bhawan and is pursuing Civil Engineering at a nearby government-owned Gyanodaya Secondary School.

“My mother is the role model of my life as she is very hard working and always inspires me. She does 9 to 5 job, comes back home, cook food for us, does the laundry and looks after all the household chores. Despite of her busy schedule she allocates time for all the family members. She always motivates me to never give up despite of hard times. So with my mother’s guidance and motivation I believe that I can work better and perfectly balance my professional and personal life. Moreover with a professional degree that I aspire to get, I wish to make my mother proud and show her that when a mother believes in her child, she can do anything!”

Pramila speaks quite frankly and has a loving nature. She starts her day with dance which makes her feel energetic and fresh. Her favorite subject is English. Singing, dancing, and watching movies are some of her hobbies. She wanted to study computer science, but her parents wanted to see her as a Civil Engineer. So to fulfill her parent’s dream, she has started to pursue civil engineering. She is very interactive and often participates in her school’s extra curriculum activities.

She said that having good grades and an education system is not sufficient to reach the goal as the ability to finance education plays a vital role in a typical middle-class family. Therefore scholarship is very important for her as it will help to reduce the financial burden on her family

Krisha is from Thankot. She lives in a joint family with her grandparents, uncle, aunt, mom, dad, and sisters. She is 17 years old and currently studying pharmacy at Manmohan Memorial Institute of health science.
Krisha believes that everyone must have plans for their future. She always dreamed of being a pharmacist. Knowing that the cost of studying pharmacy is very expensive and needs lots of hard work, she is ready to face all the challenges to pursue her dream. Her favorite subject is social studies. Her level of confidence and hard work is her biggest strength, while fear of failure is her weakness.

“Korean actor Kim Jiisoo is my role model. Although she belonged to a poor family but continued support and guidance from her guardians helped her to achieve her dreams. Her dedication, hard work and sincerity towards her acting is loved by all and Kim has become one of the most popular actors in the industry.
It is similar with my parents as they have not only given me virtue, norms, values and good manners but have worked day and night to fulfill all the necessities for me and my younger sister. Though we live in a patriarchal society, our parents have never treated us less than a son in the family. Despite financial hardship, we are provided with good education and lifestyle. So I aspire to be a better daughter to them.”

Except for studies, she likes traveling to different places, watching movies, and meeting with friends. This scholarship is very important to her because she wants to reduce the financial burden on her parents slightly. The total cost for three-year course is around 4 Lakhs. So she is really looking forward to this scholarship for her higher studies, to achieve her dream, and make her parents proud.

“My role model is former Miss Nepal Shrinkhala Khatiwada, who has inspired me by her work. Her aim to contribute back to the country with the knowledge and experience that she gained from her education at Harvard University is very commendable. Though our field of career is not similar but we both have the passion to give back to the society.”

She is a very shy and soft-spoken person. She loves to sing, dance and watch movies during her leisure time. She loves to make friends and socialize with people but lacks confidence. Lack of confidence in public speaking is her greatest weakness. So, to date, she has not participated in any stage performance in her school. However, now she wants to overcome her fear of speaking in mass, so she plans to participate in upcoming events.

Sadikchyya shares that for her family, this scholarship is very important as they have a limited source of income. She wants to make her parents happy and proud by getting this scholarship. She wants to be independent by getting a good education and helping the community in the best possible way.

Menstrual Training in Nepal

Menstrual Hygiene Day is on May 28, but CCF works year-round in Nepal to help bring awareness to the barriers women and girls face due to their period AND to help remove those barriers through education, training and reusable pad distribution! Thanks to all of our donors, we recently completed a two-day menstrual hygiene and first aid training for 63 women and girls in Nuwakot.

The hands-on training was a great success, and the women were grateful to learn more about their bodies and how to care for themselves. They also appreciated the first aid training since many don’t live close to any clinic. Now they are excited to teach their friends and families what they have learned. Seven women were selected from 3 other villages to become leaders and were given instructions and support on how to do trainings in their villages. All of the participants were given reusable menstrual kits and 400 additional kits were given to distribute in future trainings. We also distributed CCF’s menstrual hygiene manuals to participants, local schools and local female health volunteers, and we took supplies and taught women how to make their own reusable cloth pads. That has been a highlight of our recent trainings.

The Women behind our Fair Trade Paper

Sometimes things just don’t work out, even in Fair Trade. So we can either pivot and get creative or dwell in the loss of a good idea. Well we aren’t very good at dwelling in loss at Ganesh Himal Trading but we have learned how to be good at pivoting.

Since 1986, we have worked with a group of amazing women who create beautiful journals, bags and cards with handmade Nepali paper. Originally working for a project created by UNICEF,  their organization Bhaktapur Craft Printers (BCP) fell apart in 2014 when UNICEF outsourced their buying to another company and BCP lost 75% of their sales. As the managers of BCP left and with their expertise started their own paper companies it left behind a group of women who had for over 20 years created the products that BCP sold but who had never run a business. These women were in essence stranded without work. Because we knew them personally and because we believed in what they were achieving through their work, Ganesh Himal Trading stepped in to help them re-organize and provide them with continued work.  That was how Bhaktapur Women’s Craft Paper (BWCP) was born in 2015 (right before the earthquake!).

It has been such an interesting journey with these makers, many of whom are older women, as they have tried to understand how to create a business and take on all of the tasks of running a business while also making the products. They have done an amazing job and although it has not been easy on many levels they have continued to produce orders and receive income every 2 months for GHT since the dismantling of the UNICEF project of BCP. We have watched their children grow and go to school and even go to graduate school.

But as I stated in the first sentence, things don’t always work out and as much as we would have liked to see this group of women stay together as one business there were too many personal difficulties that arose. In July of 2020 the difficulties started to interfere with their work and so it was determined that the best way forward was to split the group and create a new company. This is how Creative Women Craft Paper (CWCP) was born.

Now Ganesh Himal works with both groups developing new products for CWCP and splitting the orders of the older products that they used to make together. Each group tried so hard to make it work out but sometimes that just doesn’t happen so instead of abandoning one group we got creative. Now each group is doing well and paper products are selling better than ever. Their lives are easier because they don’t have inner conflicts at work, each group is receiving good orders and we are developing different products so that the groups don’t compete with one another. So, this year we have introduced a new line of journals using the spectacular nature photographs of Nathan Peck. This is an entirely new look for Ganesh Himal and we hope you enjoy them. They are featured this month in a promotional sale because they are so indicative of the beauty of fall.

This story is just a reminder of how difficulties can be creatively solved and how Fair Trade is not always an easy path but if we keep each other’s well-being at the forefront we can move forward to positive futures together.

I love Fair Trade now more than ever. I feel so wrapped in care, in community and in visions of the possibility of how we can all live together in the world. Strange since we are also surrounded by massive uncertainty with Covid, huge political divisions, and huge income inequalities. Still, there is something about Fair Trade that helps me navigate, helps me stay on course through it all and I see it now with greater depth. It involves standing beside one another, extending our arms, helping each other up and living into a future where we can all be there for one another and thrive.

I have watched

• as Fair Trade retail businesses plummeted with Covid and their communities gathered to support them, showing them they are a treasured part of their community,
• as makers in Nepal and other countries had stability due to their long term fair trade partnerships allowing them reach out to others who were suffering and provide them with life giving support,
• as store owners supported wholesalers with understanding and increased purchases despite the uncertainties,
• as retailers, wholesalers and makers got creative and collaborative rather than small and competitive.

It hasn’t been easy, not one bit of it, but it has shown me the power of community and relationship. When we have others to stand beside us we know we can make it through and when we have a common thread to hold onto it is like a life rope and it can pull us through, the toughest of times, together.

Thank you for sharing the thread, for being a part of such a vibrant and caring community and for being part of a bigger vision for the world. Never let go of the thread.
